i have heard nothing but wonderful things about this steel, no one seems to have anything bad to say about it at all. it's almost as though its "too good to be true" so i was wondering since i just purchased a BM-E if there is anything i should know about proper care taking beyond what is normal since this steel seems to be anything bbut normal. needless to say i can't wait for it to arrive in the mail so that i can see for myself.

yes, abuse the crap out of it. Th more you use it the better it works. My users seem to hold a better edge now than when they were new, don't ask me to explain that, but it's true. The original edge seems to dull fast, but as soon as you re-sharpen it a few times it lasts forever, or seems to.

the problem with Infi is that you think you'll just buy one and you'll be all set. then you start eyeing a few other models that you feel you need, then a few more, ect.

you said it.....

Yep, it's an addiction. Fine blades and if possible, even better people.

so basically there are no drawbacks to infi itself, just the limited supply and the cravings that follow a purchase

while it is treated at 60-62rc, its wont hold an edge as long as 1095 heated to 66rc+

at very acute edge bevel angles it will have a tendancy to deform and dent and mash easier then you may like.

basically, infi is treated so that it can have the maximum hardness and still be able to avoid chipping (any chipping, ever). it is also heat treated to get as much strength as possible while maintaining enough maleability at high hardness to avoid chipping and fracturing.

this leaves you with something that is very tough, at a high hardness - but its not as high as it could go.

if you dont need a prybar, and you dont expect heavy impacts or to be cutting on extremely hard materials (as in you want to avoid having your edge chip at all cost) - there are other steels that will hold an edge longer, and have a much lower tendancy to dent/mash/roll with contact on hard objects (peice of glass, rocks, staples). again, the downside being the possibility of edge chipping and fracturing.

you should choose your steel to what your going to be cutting, how careful you plan on being with it (or are able to be with it given the circumstances), and what environment your going to be using it in. infi is a wonderful all around steel, especially if you intend on "abusing" the knife, but if you get into specific areas where a certain aspect of the knifes ability is required like edge holding with an extremely thin edge (being non magnetic/non sparking, being completely rust proof), infi will tend to fall behind to other steels that are better suited for such a dedicated task.

chippychipchipchipersonchipsalot. there. :)

figured if i was going to say that word that many times in this post, i might as well go all out with it.

edit: also price. infi is expensive.

if you want the basic levels of chip resistence and strength of infi without paying so much, you have to look to other steels that are comparable like 52100 and s7 (i imagine l6 as well, though its very rust prone). but you also you have to look for a heat treat that is specialized for chip resistence at high hardness, wich also tries to acheive high lateral strength and shock resistence.

^^

Since I can't follow that. I will say this....

Getting trampled at the Trough really sucks!!!
