I have seen an orienteering champ using one of these (not exactly that model, but the same style) and it is amazing how precise someone skilled can use them. The advantage is that someone who is really good, can maintain course over rough terrain even while running (!). I have him seen him check direction like a runner would check his time.
In my occupation it is very important to carry a compass not only for land navigation but also to check wind direction on forest fires. I use a small Brunton wrist compass on my watchband and keep another pocket size Silva compass in my shirt pocket; I sometimes like to double check my directions. The wrist compass is handier to use to check wind direction.
