Are there Spyderco COUNTERFEITS out there to watch out for?

The reason I ask is that I just did a "buy it now" on Ebay for two NIB Spyderco plain-edge Almite Navigators... at $29.99 U.S. each. I then found an auction farther down that had them selling at a buy-it-now price of $49.99 NIB... I am at a loss to explain the price disparity. Not that I am calling into question the authenticity of the first auctioner's merchandise, but I have to still be curious how he can be selling a good quality knife, new-in-box, for twenty dollars less than the next guy...

So, is anyone aware of actual COUNTERFEIT Spyderco knives in the marketplace? I don't mean "cheap knockoffs": I mean knives actually manufactured to stand-in for those of true Spyderco manufacture, complete with counterfeit Spyderco logos and everything. Hell, I know that the Chinese don't have a problem with counterfeiting our CDs and stuff, so maybe knives as well? And we all know that there are makers of fake Gucci stuff, fake Fendi, fake Polo... fake everything. Maybe they're out there making crap knife ripoffs too? I'm just hoping that there's no reason to doubt that my newly-purchased (and not-yet-obtained-and-examined) knives are on the up-and-up.

At one time Smoky Mountain Knife Works was selling these (w/VG-10 blade) on special, for $19.95. So while it's possible to be a counterfeit, it's just as likely to be real. Some how someone's making money at these prices. Good luck with yours.

Its real,Some of the dealers just have more tied up in them.SMKWs still has them for 29.99.

The only ones I am aware that could fall into this category are the BRK "First Production Run" Natives assembled by Camillus. Even these are not really "counterfeit" because it was somewhat of a joint venture between Camillus and Spyderco. There are kinda like that cousin that nobody in the family wants to admit they are related to.........

Do a search on "BRK Native" and you will learn all you need to know.

There can really be some wild price disparities for the same items on the bay, knives included. Some guys hope to find the suckers and some sell high volume/low margin. Most often patience and a little luck will result in a good deal. I got a NIB Military CPM S30V for $52.00 a couple weeks before Christmas. Make sure the seller has a LOT of feedbacks and a 98+% rating, and chances are real good you're getting the real deal.

They're almost certainly real. The company selling them on ebay has a very good reputation and great feedback.

What about those cheap $5 knives at the gas stations, they have a bucket full. They even have an opening hole:eek: I wander if they got the same treatment as the new Blackwood/Benchmade is getting:rolleyes:

Actually. I think they get worse treatment around here than the Benchmade knife did. I don't recall anyone calling it a cheap Chinese/Pakistani POS Spyderco ripoff like I have seen these other knives referred to.

What I'm really trying to find out is whether there are known unscrupulous companies out there making what are supposed to be actual Spydercos that are in fact not made by Spyderco or anyone licensed by them. In other words, is there any potential to buy a Military or a Navigator or a Delica, etc., and have it not actually be made by Spyderco?

There was a thread once (here or on the Spyderco forums) about knock-offs. Someone had a picture from the far-east of the almite Navigator that was a knock-off!!

Hi Jeffrey. Spyderco is probably copied a great deal. At least that's what we've experienced over the past 20 years. We've introduced many ideas into the industry that are now common features, such as the pocket clip or serrated edges. In the USA, we've managed to make some difference in slowing down what we legally could. Outside of the USA, there are many companies using ideas that we introduced, many exact copies, like the Navigator shown, even where we have patents or trademarks.

We just purchased an auto over the internet that had our Spyderco "bug" logo etched on the blade and was being sold as a rare Spyderco auto.

To my knowledge, no one is actually putting our name on a knife.

We would not say something like 440 stainless because there are very different varieties of 440 and there is a big difference (440A, 440B, 440C) in carbon content between them.

Our name is good, know your dealer.

Sal,
This is burning question.
How you gonna do with fake maker one?
I got one name and address of seller in Hong Kong.
They might know who is the wholesale for fake one.
You can track down to factory that made a fake one too.
You will do some thing or just sit and wait until got bigger problem?
I will stop to buy Spyderco from now on until you guys do some thing.
Or just let your brand fade out by effect of many fake one?
Buyer not everyone who know how to identify it fake or not for each model.
And not every one have much money to buy brand new from authorized seller+TAX.
That's why they bid on eBay or buy from Amazon.
They don't even know who sale to them, authorized or not?
I suggest you go to China, search and kill the fake factory one and stop it.
Or maybe your factory that making knife for you or their relative factory, who know?
It may closer than you think?
Thanks to read this.

Giving the owner of the company an ultimatum while spelling and grammar is that of a 4th grader? Priceless.

All you have to do is check Aliexpress, which is a Chinese site and indeed there are many Spyderco models such as the Military, Paras, Southard with the Spyderco markings, box and papers. They even have the Ti Military in copied Spyderco box, papers copied exactly. Orange Military same deal. So, yes the Chinese seem very busy copying Spyderco and these models are popping up on eBay and some USA sellers are listing them as the real deal, but they seem to not be stocking dealers, just people that ordered a few pieces and are trying to con buyers. (there are some auctions directly from China though, selling these fakes)
