Are they worth it?

I have been interested in knives ever since my dad showed me his collection when i was 8. Over the years, i to, accumulated a decent size of different pocket knives. Lately, I have been hearing a lot of good things about GEC Knives. I really would like to try one out, but really can't justify dropping $100 on a knife. I know that may sound "cheap", but my collection is more of a accumulation of users. To me, Its hard to drop that much money on a pocket knife. My question is, are they really worth it?

In my opinion they are worth it.

I have 8 or 9 GEC's and they are all very well made knives. Quality control is consistant in my experiences so far. Holding one in your hand and working the blades open and closed instills confidence right out of the box that the knife is built to last a lifetime and then some. Sometimes the edges are not very sharp and that is the only flaw any of mine ever had.

In my opinion you owe it to yourself as a knife enthusiast to give one a try.

Purely for just cutting something? No.

For fit/finish and the general art of the knife and for collecting, yes.

GEC knives are a cut above the hardware store offerings of old in my opinion. For a person who wants a lot of knife with many different handle material choices, yes, they are worth it.

I have to admit, they look very attractive. I don't know if i could bring myself to carry such a beautiful knife. :D

A number of us here in this forum offer free pre-scuffing services for beautiful knives -- just send it to one of us and we'll return it in a few months with plenty of scuffing and scratches to allow you to carry guilt-free. :D

It almost sounds like you want to be talked out of advancing,on the knives you want to have/own,whatever you do with them.
This is the wrong place to get talked out of it :).
I have had alot of knives & some of the GEC knives I had were great.
From the money end of it,if you keep an eye open,in the knife market area here on BF's,you may find one at a reasonable price, less than brand spankin' new & it may be the way to get one,to carry it & use it.

I give them a  & good luck on your decision.

Lordy, Lordy. You can find any number of brand-spanking-new GEC Knives for well under $100.00 -- as low as the mid $50s. I tried to send you a PM or e-mail with dealers links that have them for those prices but you don't have your PM or e-mail options open.

I don't want to be talked out of them, I was just looking for a good reason to drop that much cash. (laughs)

Some of them, when you get into the genuine stag,is pretty pricy.I myself would stay away from that, because I'd much rather dump that amount, towards a custom. But some of the newer bone is gorgeous & some patterns are really sweet. It may be the nicest piece you will have,if,you go for it.
I definitely look at them & buy them. I've used them,a little,too.

Maybe you should buy one, Use it really good and give it away!
That will help you get over feeling bad about using a more expensive
knife! Plus there's nothing better than giving a knife
away to someone who loves them just as much as you do!
GEC is a great knife! You would like it! Then you would buy more!
Trust me it will happen! Maybe Santa will bring you one!:D
Merry Christmas! Good luck.

What a great idea in this Christmas time Jason

I have been looking at the new moose, its smaller at 3.5" I believe & they have his pretty decent looking bone called "chocolate" or something. What is nice about it,is the bone has a whiteish around the edges & dark in the jigging. The blades are spear & clip

Sorry, You have to be a paying member in order to send messages, right? Cause i am not a paying member. But thanks anyway! What models are you talking about that are in the mid 50's? I have not seen them. I will surely get one if its in that range.

I bought an Easy Open Barlow from GEC and carry it in a pocket slip to keep it nice and shiny. I don't know if you can name dealers here, but the online dealer I bought mine from offers the very nice leather pocket slip for their pocket knives. I think it is worth the $$

Just like anything else in life, opinions vary. I had this conversation with myself once upon a time. While the practical me was arguing that I could do just about anything I ever needed to do with two knifes, the emotional side kept arguing that they bring me enjoyment. I don't know why anyone else has a collection, but for me it's all about enjoying the knife. It's about evolving in what you're attracted to. It's about the research of the markers and the materials. Understanding the patterns and their uses. There is something about a knife that draws me in.

I'm sure there are plenty of people who just scratch their head and wonder why.

EDIT: I forgot to add that Great Eastern has taken over the lead as my knife of choice. There is something about their styles and materials that just suck me in.

in my opinion gecs are the best traditional factory made in the world. the construction & heattreat is premium . what you consider expensive for a pocketkinfe is up to your own judgment. if 50$ is your upper end stay with case or buck. some of the chinese knives are attractive at very reasonable prices. some members do'nt blink at spending 1200$ for a pocketknife, others regard 20$ as enough to blow on a pocketknife.

thanks for the help everybody !!!! I think I am going to go ahead and purchase one. I don't know what my first GEC will be. It needs to have to blades, like a trapper of some sort. Hmm.......

I currently have 8 GEC's and most of them cost to me less than 100
some I paid 120 some 65/70 and all were surely worth the price, look nice, are nice, have great steel with a top treatment to it, cut very well if sharpened correctly
I really like GEC's and they've become one of my favourite brands
try one, a good medium sized one and you'll be definitively happy!

BTW hey modoc ED, could you send me the list of dealers you mentioned?
always looking to discover new sellers/distributors...thanks

cheers
Maxx
