Are they worth it?

life is short to carry a cheap or bad knife, I'm 25 and my money is hard earned, after saving, selling and doin' buy groups I now have a few slippies I carry and use, 8 of them are GEC's and I love and use/carry 6 of them currently and will be for long

I like to have a good quality, fine looking and sharp knife with a great HT and GEC's are excellent for their price, can only suggest them

save some money and get one or more, they'll be worth it and will serve you well for a long time

cheers for x mas

I am having trouble on deciding what model to get. And I saw Corey's thread on the Dan Burke Small Barlow. What a beautiful knife. O decisions, decisions........

The GEC #25 is a Barlow. It is 3" and thus is very easy-carrying - even in dress pants. In spite of its diminutive size, it is also a tough, stout knife that can handle real work. Mine is a Northfield with a swedged clip point, long nail pull blade in smooth buffalo horn. It was about $60 bucks, as I recall.

Yeah they are worth it. My favorite.

I prefer to buy knives like that second hand, then I dont feel guilty scuffing up the polish and the handle is starting to wear in with that awesome used and carried look.

I like the acrylic scales GEC are using. IIRC, they are quite tough and won't crack like bone.

I like this Midnight bone. Reminds me of the knives from my childhood, even though they were a jigged composite.

Then there's wood...

My view is that they are overpriced, but what do I know about production costs

There isn't really anything as good as them in terms of nailing the pattern, materials, finish - so I buy them because I want a good knife, and these are they

I just grin and bear it. It does make me selective in a way that I am not with Queen for instance. If I like a Queen pattern, I just go buy one :) With GECs, I think a lot, and usually, but not always, try and scrape up enough for the stag one :D:D

The "are they worth it" question is almost a separate one for the stag hafted knives. When I first started buying GECs a couple years ago, the burnt stag were about 20% more than a bone, wood or acrylic. Stag has really gone up lately, so that now the burnt stag models are 40-50% more than bone. It seems hard to pay that premium, but I really believe the stag handles will hold their value at least as well as other materials, given that they remain in the same condition. I base this on the apparent fact that the stags sell out more quickly than any other material, even at the recently inflated prices.

Bottom line is, if it seems worth it to you, go for it. I love the way jackknife put it:
" . . . it will please you in a way that is a gut level experiance, and has to be felt, because you can't really describe it."

"but really can't justify dropping $100 on a knife. I know that may sound "cheap", but my collection is more of a accumulation of users. To me, Its hard to drop that much money on a pocket knife. My question is, are they really worth it?"

I could hear me saying the same thing a couple of years ago. One of the first traditional knives I bought was a GEC #23. It's great and I've bought several others since. So, yea, to me they are worth it! Get some!

I think it's worth it as long as you can afford it. I don't have nearly as many as others here but I certainly don't regret getting what I have. The only "problem" with spending more for knives is that once you get past the initial cost factor and see how nice they are, it doesn't seem like a big deal to spend the money for one.:D The good news is that if you decide that it wasn't worth it you can probably sell or trade it here on the forums for not too much of a loss.

Since you don't have email enabled I left you a visitors message with a couple of links.

Very small Great Eastern collection. They're all being used in a rotation. The new moose pattern at 3" 1/2" which is on order looks like it might take over the constant EDC position.

You are probably taking real good care of those blades, cause when I use a Tidioute or UNXLD it takes a patina real fast. Now as a given, I like patinas, but do you care to share your secret with me? Might be one of those knowledge gems I haven't encountered before...

The harness jack is brand new. I just received it on Thursday. The others, I don't really do anything out of the ordinary. I don't use my knives to cut food or fruit. At night I always wipe them with a rag that is left in my middle desk drawer that is moistened with a oil I use to clean my rifles. I've been babying them a little too much. I know it but I haven't gotten over it.
