Are you carrying more knife than needed?

  • Yep. I admit it and I'm fine with it. It gives me pleasure.

For me it’s about having a diversity of tools. You carry a camp knife when a machete would work better more often, because you know the crew already has a number of machetes and that sometimes the task requires a heavier knife.

My dad carried cheap promotional knives ( he was a field service rep and had a stash of them). He cleaned it his nails cut boxes, cleaned battery terminals, cut food , basically what ever needed to be done with these "cheap" knives. He kept them sharp and they never failed him. His first "nicer" knife was one I gave him when he retired, it never did anything more that the cheeps ones. That said I tend to carry way over built knives with state of the industry steels and am satisfied but always on the hunt.

More or less.
You spelled both our names wrong.
He's Les.
I'm Moore.

I've been caring a knife for almost 50 yrs - as noted in various threads, I started a when I was 8. I've also said multiple times that, in my day-to-day, I can go weeks at a time without using a knife...and, most often, it's the traditional that I use.
Somehow, though, I still tend to carry 3 knives (traditional, modern, and fixed) when I'm not at work. Oddly enough, when I'm at home, I often find myself grabbing a nearby knife rather than taking one out of my pocket (or off my belt).

A Victorinox SAK should be enough for most of my needs.
Even my Spyderco Native 5 or my WE Banter can be considered overbuilt for my daily use…. But as much as I enjoy and appreciate my SAK, Native 5 and Banter, i think I am more curious about the manufacturing complexity of over knives
The precision of the machining, the work on the design , the choice of materials made for a purpose, etc.

Is there some kind of tax or penalty if you are carrying more knife than you need?

It has me puzzled why anyone would want to have just barely enough knife to get the job done. What if that person finds themselves in a situation that requires more knife?
I do carry a smallish Buck 303 cadet for the small stuff and picking stickers out but I also carry a large vantage for the heavier work and then I have a 110 I can switch to if I need more. I can carry them all quite easily and they don’t cause me any grief so I’m glad I have them. But I sure hope I don’t owe a bunch of back taxes because I’m carrying all those knives. 😆

If they let us carry a fixed blade, even just a small one in nyc, I'll probably be set. Unfortunately, the folks in blue and the laws do not allow for that generally. so the answer is it depends.

Lol barely enough knife or just enough means you're smarter and more manly than us plebs who carry more than enough knife.

Today just isn't my day. Find out I'm carrying to much knife and I've been rejected. I bid you adieu!
You've also outed yourself as an abuser of knives and - oh, what's the word/phrase... I'll go with - "more gentlemanly" than some of us expected, with this statement:

Almost destroyed my inkosi opening chips, I think we need even tougher knives.
I, for one, figured you tended more toward barbarian and would just tear into that chip bag.

Cutting wise I could probably get by with a slip joint but I’m hard on my knives and often use them for stuff not intended for. As a construction superintendent I’m always digging, prodding and prying into drywall or whatever. I will and have cut myself bad when a slip joint closed on me. Like others have said I carry what I want. Are they overbuilt? Yes just like a lot of other stuff we use.

Aye, this one is quite astute. I've got my good eye on you.
