I posted a topic about best folder for 1999, which got me thinking. Are we going to name Bladeforums knives of the year? 1999 was a great year in the knife industry. There were alot of great accomplishments. We should have several categories such as, best production folder, best custom folder, best production fixed blade, etc. We could nominate knives and use the survey software to tally the results. Good idea or bad idea?

Well, a popularity contest would be interesting, but not much more informative than the many “Favorite Fill-in-the-blank” threads.

What might be more useful would be finding a consensus from the members of the forum who are actively involved in the Industry. The custom makers, representatives of the various production companies, knife retailers and some of our more established members who are respected in the field, like Joe Talmadge, Cliff Stamp and Dexter Ewing. Maybe we could nominate a “Panel of Experts” to analyze the developments and trends in the field for a more in depth and informed analysis.

I have named a few whom I feel would fit the bill, any other Nominations?

actually Bald, that might be my favorite this year for one reason-it opened alot of people's eyes to what they're dealing with there.
I mean, look at it this way-
1-Greg Walker was lying
2-the Navy's Seals were lying
3-Allen Blade was lying
4-Mike Turber was lying
5-Earl is lying
etc etc etc

If it walks like a duck and smells like a duck, it just might be a duck.

BTW, one last thing-have you noticed how some of the sheeple over there have to keep making excuses and answering questions for MD. If MD stops short one of these days, they'll need a crowbar to remove a tac from his butt.

Gee Bald, thanks for getting me started.

Not a bad idea. When Time names its "Man of the year" it does not necessarily mean someone who did anything great. It really means someone or something that had alot of impact on the year. I think the MD ATAK with notched handle tang is notorious enough to receive such an honor. If not our knife of the year it definately deserves honorable mention. Perhaps it could be the most knife of the year in the "most notorious" category.

I would like to see us in some way name our knife of the year. We could, and should, have more than one category. I think being able to say "This knife was Bladeforums knife of the year" would be quite an endorsement, and something to be proud of.

I don't know about the best of the year - but there are two knives that I have bought this year that stand out above any of the other knives I bought, used, or handled this year:

The Busse Basic #9 and the CRK Sebenza

Shootist has a good idea-different categories. I think one of the biggest threads involved the Mad Dog issue. This has got to have a category all itself. I think the Sebenza would have it for overall quality. I think Kershaw's Ken Onion would have it for best opening innovation for the decade. There probably should be one for best Customer Service. Heck while you're there you might as well post the manufacturer with the worst customer service. (those lurkers would like to know, as would I).
If BFC is promoting their online magazine that "says it all", then there should be the best and the worst category.
