This may seem like an obvious point, but if circumstances warranted the much talked-about "bugging out" where would you go and how would you get there?

I'm not asking for replies with specific locations, but rather am curious as to how many of those with BOB have given WHERE to go and what possible ROUTES there are to get there.

I started thinking about this the other day when I realized I am fairly new to the area I'm now living in, and if something happened to shut down the major highway (I-79) north out of Pittsburgh, I didn't know any alternate routes.

My house is 65 miles away from my office, so this could be a serious consideration. The problems is getting OUT of the Pittsburg area -- the damn streets are like a maze, and there are only so many ways of getting over the rivers around here.

Looks like I need to do a little 'splorin.

If the bridges are closed and no ferries are running, you can still cross and/or follow rivers if you have a Packraft!

From this five pound packed size (Bic pen for scale).

My house is about 30 miles from where I work.

If I had to bug out it would likely be from work and I would likely go home.

The 2 major risks would likely be either the Bluestone Dam in Hinton failing(it's old and they are trying to save it) which would flood the entire Kanawha Valley and flood all the way down to the Ohio, or a chemical emergency at one of the many chemical plants.

I have an alternate route that I could take as long as I had enough warning that would take me out of the valley and to my house depending on how much time I had.

If it was quick I'd have to go north instead of south though because it would be easier to get out of the valley in that direction.

I'm talking on foot here.

Generally I would head to my dad's house first. Well, generator, and all the guns and ammo you can carry.:D If I had to leave the area I'd mostly likely head west toward the beach and possibly north if we're talking trade wind considerations. There's a couple highways I could take and what's rumored to be a "back way." The gravel road that starts near my dad's is rumored to connect to other roads and take you all the way to the coast. It would be a really long walk but the walk would be mostly forrest with sporadic "towns" and homes.

Here in Vancouver BC i would say goodbye to my vehicle (only 6 ways out of town, and all WILLbe blocked by police) , hello to my bicycle and i would quickly make my way 100 miles out of town to my parents house or a friends house nearby the folks house.
