Are you a cutlery expert?

I found this in an old cultery catalog. The free offer expired 60 years ago but I thought it might be fun to test our skills anyway. What is it?

Regardless of the the possible.... There is absolutely none alive who can claim a title like this who is alive today. Perhaps some really smart older folks, but cannot span or claim the cutlery history as an expert. Perhaps 200 or years ago someone could come close. Way too much... All said, an interesting pair of sissors if you will that can be better identified other than myself.....

Those Springs used to be common on pruning shears, but the jaws don't look right.
I have tin snips with a single flat blade passing between two jaws.

My guess - Tin snips

All I know is that it's some kind of medical shears, I know because of the spring mechanism that is commonly found on dog nail clippers.

The first thing that crossed my mind, before looking at other responses, was boning shears. I have no idea why, but that'd be my guess.

I'm getting ready to mow my yard, that looks like a rose bush pruner!

I don't know what it is, I'd use it to trim plants.

Anybody identify the stamp between the handles on the end?

trad_archer beat me to it - poultry shears, IMO.

I'm not a cutlery expert, but I am a surgical nurse and I'm betting they're not medical or at least surgical. That spring would be a nightmare to clean and sterilize effectively. Looks like a heavy pruner. Neat add.

I take back the medical theory, because I just realize that my pruning shears also have the same type of spring, and that if they were medical they would get all gross inside.
I'll bet they are some form of specialty aviation tin snips.

The exact item is not shown in their catalog and the family owned store now appears to be either self storage or housing. So the identification depends entirely on us.

It can be difficult to tell the types of shears apart, especially from an old catalog image. There were pruning shears, poultry shears, lobster shears, etc. My GUESS is poultry shears. Pruning shears typically had a larger leaf shaped blade. But I can't rule out pruning shears with certainty. Anyone have an exact match?

Herb choppers?

I am far from being a "cutlery expert". My uneducated and probably wrong guess would be pruning shears.

Herb choppers?

I just googled "herb scissors vintage" and found this image:

Looking closer at the op, it does look like there are multiple blades.

This is a fun game. :) At the antique store I go to, they put an object on the counter, and you try to guess what it is. They should give you a discount if you know, but they don't. :grumpy:
:D
