Are you a khukuri collector or user?

I initially started out with the aim of getting a good knife or two for utility use and then started collecting khukuris when I saw how nice some were(Banspati, etc.)

I believe that most forumites started out this way.

What do you think?

I only have a small khukuri collection, three real ones and two khukuri looking things from AC. The ones I do own are the basic ones like the BAS and the 20" Sirupati. I don't put them to any real use since I don't have any place to use them here in LA. I guess what I am trying to say is that I am a collector (with a VERY modest collection). There is hope though. I am young, and it is still early in my life, so I plan on building up my collection of khukuris slowly, but surely.

Welcome aboard, Christian.

I think you'll find that you will learn lots in this forum (and also other forums here on the Bladeforums website). There are a fair number of collectors here so don't hesitate to ask them what makes a good khukuri.

Harry

BTW, I live in an apartment so my actual khukuri use is limited to my camping, hiking, hunting, fishing, and my mother's garden.

Take your time, Chris, and do it right.

I have a limited number in my own collection but most cannot be replaced or duplicated. And, I use a khukuri from time to time, too.

So, I guess I use and collect both as I believe many of us here do.

Khukuri FAQ

I've got a couple of "users", BAS & AK, and will probably purchase a collector piece next.
Still learning, following forum threads, asking questions, etc. Interesting knives & topics.

:
I have 15 now.Two of them are the tourist junk ones. They both have the lions head on the buttcap. One of them is supposed to be a Janawar Katne, but that's a joke.

I have some like the Banspati and Hanuman Special that are collectable, but have been tested for thier chopping caabilities and repolished so it doesn't show.

The 18"AK I have is still my favorite with the MS and GS coming in a real close 2nd.
I got the last of the Salyans and it is one of my very favorites!
That's one Awesome Khukuri!

I have a few other knives that are made primarily as real weapons that are never used.
I have 2 of the Morroco curved knives and a real Keris that's about 100 to 200 years old.
I also have a Muslim Filipino
sword that's pretty old.The steel in it would compare with the finest Toledo Steel!

I have thought about selling some once in a while to support my Khukuri addction, but just can't bring myself to do so.
I have had them for about 25 years now.

I should add that I have also gotten to know about Nepal and it's people, cultures as well as the good people in this forum, as a result of becoming a khukuri knut.

User here. I have an AK and gave my BAS and 15" Sirupati away as gifts. I don't like the idea of having a beautiful tool that does't get used.

I'm not sure yet! I have 2 so far: a 20" Ak and a Gelbu special. The AK is definitely a user, and the GS is a light user (I will cut light brush with it but no heavy duty use). I imagine down the road I'll buy a Khuk solely for looking at, but for now its too much fun using them to do that!

I consider myself an USER.

I started off with one khukuri and now I have over 10 (two are dismantled). I use most of them, but I do have a couple of small ones which are more for looking at rather than using. They are addicting!

When I head to the woods I take my khukuri and my Ruger Vaquero.Does that make me a "khukuri Cowboy"? I've always used my collection. I get more enjoyment out of them that way.

I am:
  • A Khukuri collector - I have couple of HI Khuks - AK, BAS, 18th C, WW II, Village Chainpuri, GRS, Dhankuta, Kagas Katne + few in the air + few in the making! I just want to specialize in collecting Khuks - an extra ordinary collections in a country where most people collect KERIS!
  • A Khukuri user - I used all my Khukuris for small tasks such as chopping woods, cutting grass, food prep works but ... NO KILLING! I AM NOT A KILLER! NOT YET! DON'T FORCE ME! ALLAH PLEASE ... DON'T MAKE ME ONE!
  • An unofficial HI Khukuris distributer in Malaysia - couple of friends made orders thru me! - it makes me happy to see friends having REAL KHUKURIS![/list=a]Thanks to Pakcik Bill, Yangdu, Kami Sherpa and those internet peoples who were responsible to bring me to the world of genuine Nepalese Khuks!

User here. From chopping, splitting wood, prying and hammering with my 20" Villager general utility to slicing brush, tomatoes and frozen chicken with my 20" Sirupati Villager, these babies get used and abused. I'm constantly amazed at what these knives can do and still keep coming back for more!

'He's losin' it... (Words spoken about me by a visitor seeing me with my Khuk!)
Lucky for them I'm not...

I definitely am a "user." To me the beauty of these blades are their functionality.

At this point, I have seven khuk's at home. Two at camp. Two yet to arrive. And, I think I gave away 6 or 7 to martial arts and outdoor oriented friends.

I think I've maxed out. At least until the next one that strikes my fancy...

I have a couple of ivory handled khukuris and a few others that I would only use in an emergency situation. These are my collector models. I have a few under the bed that are user models but have sentimental value and I'd hate to have to use them.

I have two or three that are beaten to death. These are my user models.

User-collector.

Khukuri FAQ

I read this forum for a long, long time before I actually started posting anything. In all this time I've never read a post where someone bought HI khuks just to collect. I'm sure that they exist, but what a waste! To me it is disrespectful to the soul of the blade to not use it. So everyone reading this that has a khuk nearby, honor it and start chopping!

I have two users and several collectibles. The users are a WWII and a nine-incher (brass & buffalo horn).
