Are you consciously aware of how you hold your knife when you whip it out ( take your knife out ), use it, then put it away real quick ?.

It seems to me that the grip I'd most often use would be a modified sabre grip as most of my cuts are horizontal, but I never really pay attention to how I hold my knife the times I use it second nature without thinking about it.

I almost always am cutting down, and always readjust my grip to the "standard" way, with my thumb on the top of the base of the blade.

Yes, I've developed muscle memory with waved folders and fixed blades. Both are always drawn into edge out Pikal.

The last time I wasn't paying attention to the knife I was using, I ended up with a chunk missing.
Of course I try to think about the task at hand and pay attention, but sometimes it's just second nature when I say need to cut a piece of twine off of the spool. This cut is the same every time and sometimes my knife is already back in my pocket before I know it.

Maybe I'm just thinking too hard about my knife hold tendency.

Yes because 90% of the cuts I make in a days time are somewhat difficult and in unorthodox positions.

I usually EDC an Emerson with wave so i absolutely do "whip" it out :p

Hammer grip every time without even thinking about it. Same goes for the days ill carry a non waved blade, thumb stud, flipper, etc... Ill adjust grip accordingly to the task, but out of the gate its always the Hammer.

I don't "whip out" my knives.

I don't think I've ever thought about it. ;)

What a difference the thumb makes. I sort of figured, but I thought I would ask about grips.

Charlie Mike; What's that grip called? Fighting grip? I bought a BK-2 a few years ago when they were all the rave here. Showed it to my special forces brother in law and that is precisely the grip he employed with it. He just smiled. It was a little scary actually.

I think about it, as it pertains heavily to the ergonomics I prefer. I use a modified pinch grip and hammer grip more than anything else. I tend to avoid knives with narrow blades and handles for that reason.

Edge out Pikal.

I usually hold my knife so the knife is sideways with my thumb on the side of the blade and my pointer finger all the way up near the tip (works great for opening boxes/ breaking down boxes)
