Are you looking for the right deal or the right knife?

Guilty as charged - I'm a sucker for a good deal. There are still certain characteristics that are a no-no for me personally like serrations, assisted, waves...but that still leaves a heck of a lot of knives for me to potentially buy.

My other issue is money. When I have money in my PayPal account I'm like a freaking tiger on the prowl in the exchange. Constantly refreshing it...talking myself out of knives I know I wouldn't like but have enough money to buy. The higher my Paypal balance is the more super-heated it becomes as it inevitably burns a hole in my virtual pocket. I've tried making a list of knives I want so I don't buy knives I 'don't want' (put that in quotes because who here doesn't want a knife) but it seems like every time I try that they literally never show up on the exchange. Generally I give up a short time later and start pulling the trigger on anything my eyes talk me into buying, which doesn't take much.

Every knife I currently own I've bought & sold at least once before. It's like some sick joke I keep playing on myself. I'm just gonna end this mental splurge with this - I love every minute of it. :D

I think you just summed me up in a nutshell. The thrill of the hunt, then sniping that one deal if and when it pops up, some times I'll just suck it up and pay a premium if its a must have knife.

The hunt is 3/4 of the fun.

People on the exchange know what they have usually and price it accordingly. The very large auction site is where you may stumble across a $9.99 full size Griptilian - buy it now price. (Happened to me - true story)

Sort of.... I am always looking for the right knife, but not necessarily the "right deal" since I usually buy retail.

I'm always looking for the right knife but I'm a sucker for a good deal. I end up spending more but I also get more knives!

Guilty as charged as well...! I've been a member for only 4 months and if my 30+ feedback score doesn't show I'm a nut in the short period then I should tell you I've bought and sold over 50 knives on the exchange alone. I will admit one thing, I'm all about a good deal and have NEVER purchased a knife new from a retailer. As a matter of fact every knife I've ever owned has been from the exchange a few of which have been from the OP! Just today a Sage 1 came up in the exchange for CHEAP, do I need another...well no, thankfully fetzer85 posted before I could!
Before I was a member I had never owned a pocket knife other than a folding utility knife!

I'm at the point where I don't really need any more knives and i actually need to sell some since I have more than enough to carry, but if I see a smoking deal on something I like , I can't hardly pass it up. The 0562cf was the last knife I knew I absolutely had to have when I seen it, but I still didn't buy it until I found a great deal.

What's a great knife without a great deal ? A great deal is a great knife for a great price . Or something like that . I like them both .

I've just recently started getting into the exchange, and I can definitely understand what you're talking about. Though for me it's more of a thrill to sell knives...... What can I say? I like money:D

I have yet to buy anything on the exchange, but it'll probably happen soon enough provided I find a good deal on something I like. The problem with this place is that you aren't guaranteed to find what you're looking for, and the prices are fairly similar to retail because most people here know what they're doing.

But I too am very impulsive when it comes to buying knives. Ijust grabbed an m390 ritter mini grip yesterday, having never even looked at it before. I just saw m390 and a great price. That's all it takes sometimes ;)

Right now, I'm on the hunt for a small seb 21, swamprat rucki, BM Contego, and a Ratmandu. But I'm sure that before most of these have been acquired, I will have gotten many others that I had no intention of buying.:)

I'm ALWAYS on the lookout for a deal. I've bought stuff I never, ever thought I would buy, or even had any use for. I'm always on the hunt.... And it's true - the hunt is what drives me. It's so much fun looking.

Ever hear that Motörhead song "the chase is better than the catch"? Sometimes it's true....

The paypal bit describes me so perfectly, I actually laughed out loud!

Stalking the classifieds, AND ebay; I'm actually way worse with guitars and amps. :D

Since I've joined here, I've purchased two PM2s, and an XM-18.

Haven't seen the term here (yet), but on the guitar forums, the phenomenon is known as GAS (gear acquisition syndrome).

Definitely suffering from the bladed version of GAS, at the moment. :D

Both. It's getting tougher though as the market is getting flooded with all kinds of knife like objects. I've seen some stuff in the last 10 months that makes me wonder what some of these guys were thinking. Also, prices seem to be going up and up and up as usual.

If I can get a good deal, great. If not, sometimes I pay more than I'd prefer. "The thrill of the hunt" is meaningless to me. I want knives, not thrills.

There is a fine line between great deal, and unrealistic expectation of price to be paid. With the Internet, and some research you should find great prices. But the down side of some of the net dealers, is they reel you in with a low price on item they do not have. Than try in some cases to switch you to something they do have.

So you don't get excited when you search for and sniff out a great deal on a knife you've been wanting? I sure do... And it's definitely part if the fun for me. I'm never more excited about the deal than the knife I'll wind up with, but if I get a good deal it very much adds to the excitement.

So much better than saying "yeah I paid through the nose for this thing. Almost 200% markup. But I had to have it. Woooooo hoo?"

A great deal is only great when it's a deal on a great product and imho the right deal can only be had on the right product (in this case knife).

A good price gets me into knives that are less practical than I would usually buy.

The thing with buying something discount is it lowers your risk. Instead of taking a haircut when you get bored with it you're not out much/anything.
