Are you satisfied with Spyderco's "fit and finish"?

If you think you are disappointed now, tweak it the way you want it. Now, when you have legitimate issues, see what their warranty is all about 😳🤣

Even though I like that Byrd now, I didn't like it at all when I first got it. I assume the real-deal Spyderco would be better, but it seems like I'll be "heavily modifying" this one too.

Despite all that criticism, there are things I love about the knife. The blade geometry is great, it came sharper than most knives do from the factory, it's light... I expect that I will like the knife a LOT once I'm finished tweaking it.
Before you plan on tweaking a Spyderco, beware of thread-locked screws.

I have had lots of problems with Spydercos, but not so much with F&F unless you count very dull edges or an uneven bevel (20 degrees one side, 27 the other). Those are fixable. But the Spydie holes are always nice and sharp. :-)

I have enjoyed that with spyderco I can tell where they spent my money. If someone spends all the time and effort to put a polish on everything, well, where did that come from? heat treat consistency? Blade steel alloy? Long term service and support? Life is not perfect, and to expect otherwise is to invite disappointment. It's hard to compare apples to apples between manufacturers, because some costs are based on choices made decades ago, so I figure, if I like it, I like it, if not, so be it. It's the same as when I'm buying my other tools. None of them were built by me, for the job I'm doing now, so whoever made them made their best guess, and thus I must compromise to some degree.

You had a simple question but your post seems unrelated and purposefully provocative.
I said nice things about the knife too, including "I expect that I will like the knife a LOT once I'm finished tweaking it." That remains true.

I had an opinion, but I also think some have read more into my post than was really there - as though I was out to pick on Spyderco.

I AM surprised the fit and finish wasn't better - but I learned than I am an outlier. It seems as though the majority saw nothing unusual about my knife and I presume that means that if I buy another Spyderco, that's how I should expect it to be.

Get the lynch NW Ti scales and rebuilt it.

Thanks for the suggestion. I looked at those, but they're sold out. Any other scales you'd recommend?

I asked Boomer52 from this forum, but he's not making scales anymore. The Flytanium versions don't excite me much. I might try another DIY pair if I don't find something I like.

I've never had a significant issue with a Golden or Taiwan Spyderco, but I've stopped buying the Seki models as they are just too much of a gamble for me. They're functional but rough, and I don't think the lock play I've seen on some of my Seki models is acceptable at any price point.

You did ask this question on a Spyderco-specific forum, so it's not shocking that you received answers from those who don't have issues with Spyderco knives. A post to the general discussion area might yield different responses.

Overall, yes I am satisfied with Spyderco’s f&f.
I haven’t counted, but probably have at least 30. They have not all been perfect.
I have one from Japan, one from US, and one from Taichung that, in retrospect, probably should have been returned to the dealer/seller. But for various reasons I kept them, use them, and enjoy them.

I've used Syderco knives for about 40 years without any problems. My current is a Gayle Bradley #1 which I've used around the house, shop, and yard with success in any cutting chore. I'm attaching some pictures of what it looked like when purchased.

I've had a similar experience with the Seki models! Most have been ok, Unfortunately some the lock rock is ridiculous for price paid!

I haven't had any problems with any Spyderco, fit and finish, or otherwise. Like S stillshot2 , I too break the edges of the hole and spine with a ceramic rod.

I avoid made in China completely and mostly go for Taichung and Golden. Seki is the grey zone where I sometimes say no to some models like the Stretch 2 XL or am occasionally lured by K390 or a salt model or whatever it may be. By avoiding impulse buys and doing some basic research in advance, so far had no regrets with the made in Japan SSS, Dragonflies, Tasman Salt. I buy them to be used outdoors, so cosmetic appearance doesn't matter.

I have only Golden and Taiwan Spydercos, they have all been excellent for fit and finish, even the second hand ones I've acquired. Still hunting for a K2!

I received my new M2 and I am very happy with fit and finish. Perfectly centered, locks up nicely and came razor sharp. Love it.

Yes, I have in the past but not in the last two years.IMHO, quality is going a bit downhill.

SNK 4V Manix 2 XL - a loose lanyard tube and a black smudge on the edge

MTG S30V Teal Endura 4 - Didn't have a full ground edge - a tiny bump on the edge

Teal S30V Ladybug - Knife was almost butter knife sharp and wouldn't cut at all.Edge was ground but wasn't sharp enough to cut.

Been very happy with the Golden and Taichung models, particularly the latter in terms of fit and finish, but the Seki models are the first knives from Spyderco I got where the edge bevels were just hilariously uneven. I sharpen all my own stuff anyway so it's whatever, but this just wasn't something I experienced with the Golden and Taichung Spydercos or even the China made stuff for that matter. I've gotten seconds models with better edge bevels. A number of Seki back lock examples I own (delica, dragonfly 2, endela, stretch 2, the recent Goddard sprint) displayed some lock rock when cutting into harder material which bugged me more than the uneven bevels. My Golden back locks like the Native 5 G10 and LW variants don't exhibit this. Seki has a lot of models I like a lot, but I don't think their QC is as good as the other factories, at least in my personal experience.

I don't have any Seki knives, but all the Spydercos I have are excellent with fit and finish, most of them are dead centered and possess great action right out of the box
