Are you still buying liner locks?

Only an exceptional few.

I have had three different liner lock folders by top-notch custom makers fail on me, under the most un-extreme circumstances.
wow, stay away from vegas buddy :D

btw, what custom makes/models failed on you?

hardheart, funny that Spyderco, and others, still make linerlocks in the face of all the "less functionally dangerous" locks they make. You'd think that if linerlocks were so prone to failure, they'd stop making them. ...but what we have here is the usual proffering of strong opinions with no real data and only a little anecdotal evidence.

Wait a minute, I just remembered, the only linerlock I ever stopped carrying was a Spyderco Military! The radius in the handle to give access to the liner for unlocking was just way too generous. I was afraid of unlocking the liner accidentally. My AFCK cut-out was flush with the liner so I had more trust in it, and it never failed me in the five years I carried it for military service.

I guess the idea is that the concept of a liner lock is sound, it's the execution that makes some people nervous.

I used to prefer a good lock back over a liner lock but I can't fault any liner locks I own to date. Am I still buying liner locks...just bought one of David Winston's liner locks as a companion piece to one of his fixed blades!

Yes. I still buy liner locks - but quite rarely. My last folder was WH T-12-BT. Nice folder and well executed lock. I don't think that I'll buy another linerlock for some time but if something nice comes my way I may not be able to resist.

The idea behind the liner lock works just fine; execution is something else entirely. I got rid of all my liner locking knives, and won't be buying any more unless they're attached to Striders or knives of similar quality. There are just too many good framelocks out there to be playing Russion roulette with a liner locker.

Aside from a butterfly, I watch my fingers with any knife that folds, because it folds. ;) That said, I have a few fixed blades that I grab for really heavy use.

I do still purchase liner-lock knives although I prefer frame-locks such as those found on CRK folders. I always examine the liner closely to make sure that it adequately matches up with the tang before I even think about buying it.

Yes,I continue to buy liner-locks.Most recently I bought an Al Mar SERE and a Spyderco Military.I couldn't defeat the locks on either no matter what grip I used.I have had a few back-locks partially close when white knuckling them but didn't loose any blood.I have mixed feelings on the spine - whack test as I usually don't use my knives for extreme duty and when I cut I usually have downward pressure on the blade so it is actually trying to open more than it already is,if you know what I mean?tom.

edited for spelling.Did you even notice?LOL. ;)

I have said this before. In general I won’t be buying any liner lock or frame lock knives. As NathenS said, the concept of the liner lock is good. The problem comes from the execution. If the company or maker takes the time to be certain that everything is incredibly precise and correct, a liner lock will work well and is self compensating, if not you may have problems. I have or have had eight liner/frame lock knives, six of them have given me problems of one sort or another. They are all high quality knives, (3 BM’s, Camillus Dominator, 2 WH’s, a Microtech and a Greco). The lockbacks, the one axis lock and the one Bali I have are all trouble free. The most used knives I have by far are a Buck 110 and a BM 941, no problems at all. If I were in the market, I might consider a CRK, simply due to their reputation here on BF for incredible quality, or possibly a custom from a maker with an excellent reputation, but for now, I won’t consider any more.

90% of the knives I buy now adays are framelocks. They just really appeal to me. I have let several linerlocks go that I thought I would never part with just for the fact they were linerlocks so I rarely pick up a new one. Maybe an occasional custom thats design caught my eye
