Argonne Lab/Waterfall Glen Hike ~ warning - graphic knife abuse!

Howdy Chris! Looks like a great time. I grew up literally right next door to Argonne as my Dad used to work there. The waterfall pictured is actually a man-made one and is quite the popular destination. There are more than a few hidden gems back in there. In my younger years, I mountain biked through ALL of it. There are tons of deer back there, yet I haven't seen one of the white deer in a long time. Maybe all of the 'yotes have taken care of them. I do have a bit of trivia for you... the ONLY naturally occuring waterfall in DuPage county is in that area. There are also a few hidden gem ponds with fish in them too, though it's been decades since I've visited those. There are also several boy scout camps scattered in there that date back to the 50's, though they are probably overgrown and reclaimed by nature now... doubt I could find them again.

Thanks for the pics, looks like I'll have to get myself back into some kind of hiking shape and get out.

Mongo,

The white deer are only found within Argonne property--they were there as recently as 2005 and in good numbers. I'm pretty sure they aren't found in Waterfall Glen, although anyone who disagrees has already won the argument since I've only seen the white deer within Argonne, and haven't seen 'em at WG (yet). That doesn't make me the expert by any means.

They are usually seen grazing just outside the dense wooded areas north of Bluff Rd and south of 91 street on either side along Cass ave. They are outside the DOE fencing so they roam wherever they desire. Years ago when their numbers were higher, you could see them any day of the week but nowadays it's a rare occurrence. We used to play softball in the employees park as teens (before they gated it) and they were often seen crossing the parks fields.

Yup, the waterfall pictured was built by the CCC.

They used to be in higher numbers, we used to get them in our back yard on occasion. I did hear that they were now confined to the Lab grounds. I do remember them as being relatively stupid by deer standards... as in much more habituated to humans.

Hmmm, that waterfall? I'd have to see a different pic. Where was that one taken? PM me back if ya wanna keep it secret...;):D
