arizonaironwood

I haven't bought anything from him (every time I've been out in AZ I've missed him). Folks I know who have have been happy about what they got. I'd suggest calling and talking with him to see if he's got what you're looking for. Ironwood comes in such a wide variety of colors (I've got everything from blond, to gold, to orange, to MANY shades of brown) so it's a good idea to call and chat with him and see if what he has is what you're looking for.

I stopped buying wood sight unseen over a year ago after getting shafted a few times. It never even came close to the desription thay gave of it. A knife handle has only few square inches so what is there has to jump out and slap you upside the head. 90% of the wood I look at does not do that.

Wow. I go through this all the time. I also won't buy wood without seeing it first. I go to places along the Oregon and California coasts from time to time that have California Buckeye, Oregon Myrtle, Birdseye Maple and Redwood Burl. I find myself sifting through board after board looking for pieces that have the most area covered by that "special" pattern. Or sometimes I find a board that only has a small area that has that "special" pattern. If it's an incredible enough pattern on that small area, I might buy the entire board to get that small piece off of it. Sometimes I'll look through hundreds of pieces and not find anything that I like.

I was crosscut hardwoods in Portland, Oregon recently and in their pile of cut off ends was an unbelievable piece of purpleheart. It's covered in these swirling vortexes all through the board! It looks like a purple firestorm. The piece is also rather large at about 1" thick by 8" wide by about 4' long. It cost me $4.50! Score!!!!!!!!!!

Not that i have made many knifes, but all the wood i have gotten for the ones i made came from alpha knife supply, they have so many pics of wood it takes some time just looking at it all. they have been great folks to do business with. ill be finishing a knife tommorrow with wood from alpha ill post pic so u can see.

scottickes,

I live in northern California on the coast. Where do you go to find some good wood?

Thanks,
Alex

Alpha Knife Supply has pictures on their site of every piece of wood. The Bybees are good people to deal with.
I usually will not buy wood I can't hold in my hand and look at.

Ive been burnt too many times on wood too but the Bybees go to so much trouble to show you what you are getting. They also understand the moisture content and only send it for stabilizing when the time is right. This means they have to store it and wait for many months or years for some woods. I only buy from them now.
