Arkansas Knifemakers Association, Art of Steel Show - Huh? What's Going On?

Thanks for the answer, what a shame.

I sure liked their shows and to me, awards from a knifemaker's association mean more. They were a nice bunch, one year, someone from AKA was giving out free passes at the Bowie exhibit at the AK museum on Friday. I'll bet a lot of makers will miss the banquet, just for the fellowship.

Brownshoe,
The show goes on, as do the free passes and a good bunch of folks. The only change is no banquet. I'm on the fence about the knife judging, go somewhere to eat or submit knives for judging???

I think the goal with the judging is to cut the time down so people can go ahead and eat...I know that aspect was discussed last year. To be honest the food wasn't exactly stellar;). I think the awards will still mean just as much as in the past since it is still makers judging the work as opposed to dealers, etc. For those of you who don't know, it was Kerry Brooks who put on the cutting competition last time. He's worked with the guys putting on the show before so I think it should be an easy transition. I would encourage makers and and collectors who attend to offer suggestions for improving the show if you see any...he seems open to ideas.

Speaking as a former AKA boardmember, I can say the change was inevitable and also that I feel Kerry will do a great job with the show.

I agree with Ben, the awards continue to be very coveted and I'm sure Kerry will welcome any input from both makers and collectors.

Ought to be an awsome show! There was some talk at first of changing the awards judging to a panel of judges...thankfully that isn't going to happen. In the last mailing I got it said ABS Journeymen, Mastersmiths, and voting members of the Knifemaker's Guild can have a ballot. While it excludes some non-ranking makers, I think it still maintains the integrity of the awards. There is also a $1000 prize for Best in Show...as usual there ought to be brutally stiff competition for the awards. Hope to see y'all there!

So even if you don't have a table there, if you are a JS, MS or Guild member you can still vote for the awards?

Just looked at the rules. Table holders who are JS, MS, or voting Guild member can vote.
