Arm stropping

A technically possible option but advertised as snake oil would be overstated and oversold from what I see.

What an idiot. Not really sure what he's trying to prove, but it looks like its deffinitely something.

A cat's tounge is actually the best organic stropping medium I have come across. No diamond past needed, just a little salmon.

Well I prefer less gimmicks but that's just me. I'm sure someone who wears a calculator watch is just blown away by it. ;)

As a technical exercise, yes, you can strop on your arm... and your pant leg, belt, cardboard, softer wood, paper, upholstery, etc. Lots of other options that don't risk personal injury.

Palm will also work, and is a little tougher. But there are so many other materials that work, like you mentioned, why risk it.

I'm half tempted to buy the sharpener for a test. Complete with arm stropping of course.

Hey now.. Don't drag calculator watches into this. They're a classic!

Now stropping on any body part is.. Well it's just dumb.

Him getting anywhere near my knives...
That guy is crazy. Never mind the arm, what is he doing with the leather? Ruining the edge, I would wager. Notice how he doesn't cut the paper after he uses the leather?

To me it looked like the angle was WAY too high when he was stopping on leather. That quick stropping is the flash necessary to make the sale.

On the other hand I saw a video where Bill Bagwell wiped the edge a few times across his palm and said he was "stropping" the edge this way. Though I think his hands have magical properties.

This tactic (brash showmanship) is often used to put those that are uneducated in awe of the showmans "skill".

I can name three separate people who came into my meat room in this calendar year and flailed around a knife and steel, trying to show me "how a Real Butcher uses a steel" or to a similar end. None of them have come back after I asked the third guy to cut through the silver and tendon on a strip, as me and the other cutter watched him struggle in amusement.

Ok, while technically speaking, he is "stropping" the knifes edge, and human skin does have some silicates in it to abrade steel, it is often not enough to make an appreciable difference.

Furthermore, if any wire edge is stripped from stropping on untanned human skin, the apex would be left ragged enough that it would likely seem as if a strop at all hasn't been used, or the blade wasn't fully apexed.

I saw an old james stewart western where he strops the knife on the palm of his hand before cutting a bullet out of someone

My biggest trouble I've discovered is how hard it is to find the elusive arm strop in the wild when I try to go minimalistic ... it's almost completely ruined camping for me ... I catch fish and sit by the fire ....dull knife in hand
... just exhausted after searching the area for a decent forearm strop ... maybe I'm gonna have to break down and try buying some of those dumb store bought sharpening stones and strops.

Please don't think less of me for giving into the modern ways ... I tried ... I really tried ... they just kept crying and whining something about stitches and bleeding out ... pffft ...
