Just wondering, if the world as we know it (I know that phrase is well worn) was to suddenly go into complete chaos and economy shutdown due to world-wide disaster (think nuclear contamination, meteor striking earth, nature going wild: hurricanes, tornados, tsusamis, etc.)

In such a case, if there were only one knife you could have in order to survive and try to maintain some semblance of existence and your family's, what knife would you most want to have? Only one knife permitted.

I was thinking maybe a busse battle mistress although I would like to hear your responses and reasons. What would your choice be?

Thanks, and Happy New Year!

Technically, that's the sort of situation my Dozier Wilderness Knife was designed for, but I'd be OK with my Chris Reeve Sable III. I don't think I'd want a supersized blade, because most of what a good knife does is smaller scale. Maybe a Satin Jack. :)

I googled "knife that neutralizes nuclear contamination, meteor striking earth, nature going wild: hurricanes, tornados, tsusamis".

Sorry to report that the search came up empty.

:(

And a Happy New Year to you, too! :p

I would take my Busse Satin Jack Tac, assuming that it is my only Knife, not the only tool. I would have an assortment of other tools, but that knife would do most any chore.

Hmmmmm. One knife only, eh? What exactly counts as a knife? If I were facing hordes of zombies, etc., I'd want to have a slingblade... well, some people calls it a Kaiser blade, but I calls it a Slingblade Ummm Hmmm. That'd whack down plenty of zombies. Ummm Hmmm...

Now if you're talking just a knife to keep with you along with your AK47, .308 sniper rifle, MP5, and custom 1911 (plus tons of ammo of course), then I'm thinking Busse Battle Mistress.

Why? It's easier to do smaller tasks with a big knife instead of carrying a small knife and trying to make it do the work of a big knife. In other words: I could whittle fuzz sticks with my Battle Mistress (a small knife task), but I couldn't chop down a tree with my Sere 2K. (the BM would do it no problem)

my millitary is coming with me then
because i have for the moment onley two knives and the millitary is my best

SAK.

Duh!

A Busse/Sable/ATAK is a good choice until you have to undo a screw. Or pick a sliver out of your finger. Or use a magnifying glass to read a feature on a map. Or use a file to cut through a small bolt. Or a saw to fell a sapling. Or...

That could never happenI always have several knives on hand/available/in pocket so I can't answer an impossible question.

But if I have to pick it would be whatever I have on me, whatever I carry is a top quality knife(why carry junk?) so with that in mind whatever's in my pocket will suffice.

Besides with a gun I can get as many knives as I need.:D .

Good luck trying to fell a sapling with your SAK saw. It will take you forever on a small sapling. A big blade will do it in seconds. I won't need a magnifying glass either. I can use almost anything with a flat end as a screw driver, I have done it often. I don't see myself cutting bolts but in an emergency situation where I would need to a big tough blade would do it. I pull slivers out all the time with my finvers and any knife tip will do. Done it many times. What you cannot do with an SAK is Hammer and dig. You can do this with a large blade. Self defense if an issuei s better obviously with a fixed blade. Also the fixed blade will not likely break. All folding knives eventually break if used hard enough. They also Jam and their inner components corrode.

But an SAK would be a good backup to any pack and I always carry a leatherman tool near me along wth a fixed blade.

I have to go with otter on this. Think of the cans of food you will come across while scavanging in the ruins of mankind. You need to open them.

And that sharp little sucker will be handy when after the radiation sickness is getting to you, or you're cornered by the zombie's, or you're freezing in the nuclear winter, you can slit your throat and put an end to the suffering real quick!

What would you consider a small sapling? I used to cut a fresh sapling for a hiking staff when I hit the woods. Took less than ten minutes to cut down and trim smooth with a SAK saw and spearpoint blade.

Probably a Leatherman Super Tool.

I'm sure that I would be either walking or riding a bicycle--best to travel light.

Allen.
