Guys

I received a very disturbing email from a recipient of one of my knives in Iraq. He stated that the army has gotten soft, and now has a regulation against solders there caring personal knives.

Has anyone else heard anything about this?

I am in Iraq and have never heard such a thing. It might be this guys or girls particular unit has made this rule, which is absurd IMO.

now that doesnt make sense! I think this should go in current events, or another forum like that. I wonder why that is, If they arent trusted with carring a knife, why a bomb or rifle?

If that is true it is pretty sad. You can be sent over there among animals that strap bombs to themselves but "NO KNIVES". :jerkit:

Its prob the unit, while we were there they had no prob with anything we carried but we were right on the edge of hell its self. some of the rear echalon units had strange rules.

Most likely that's the CO's or 1SG's call on that. I know that when I was in Bosnia and Kosovo the only limitations that I imposed on knife carry was that it MUST NOT interfere with my soldier entering or exiting a vehicle.

Leave it up to someone in power to make a smart choice like that, lol

I mean having some rules is reasonable but no personal knife is just dumb

My Brother is getting ready to go and he told me today that most people do not carry other knives infact I am thinking of making one for him for when he leaves. Just have to come up with a good Tactical Usefull design that he would want to use. He also hunts so it would have double purpose

my friend OB couldnt take his "OB" knife (of whom it was named) with him for the first half of the tour. 3 inch limit restriction

2 guys had got in a fight over some food of all things in the barracks and one knifed the other. = knife restriction

luckily OB got to get his knife shipped to him about half way as they found they had a real use for good field blades

I hope not, I just got a Ranger RD6 to take with me when I head out this summer. My current unit has a 4 inch limit that is widely ignored.

Another issue is the REMFs that will try to legally steal the knives from young soldiers. On my way to Kosovo I was informed by a very helpful Air Farce NCO that I couldn't take anything other than my SOG para tool with me into theater. I asked him the reasoning behind that since I was carrying my weapon, battle rattle and other wonderful gear with me. He said that my SOG pent elite violated some rule or another because it could be opened unassisted and the field knife I made violated some 5.9879" blade rule but he was willing to help me out by storing the knives until I returned from theater. I told him very friendly like that before I handed them over I'd stomp the blades until they were broken. He mumbled some crap about just trying to help, so I got all worked up and asked him how many knives did he get from young Soldiers that didn't know better. When I got into Kosovo I fired off a heat round to the NCOIC of the terminal about this guy's behaviour.

crazy stories....

Having talked to a few deployed soldiers (from enlisted to rangers)...it's not that they can't have a knife...it's that you're not supposed to bring a bunch of gear from home.

Notice the OP says "personal knives"

And yes, I agree that each unit writes its own rules. :(

i know for fact they are trying to keep big dumb rambo type knives and the like for being there. those knives are not good field knives and they just have extra pounds to add to your pack weight

also mid east people have a different view of knives as beheading and loping off a hand still is a fear while gun shots seem not to bother them mentally that is

so in the winning of hearts and minds there is some PC that has to be played

I never advocate the carrying of a "crew served knife" a troop with 50 pounds of battle rattle does not need 16" of steel hanging off of his leg. But a reasonable sized knife shouldn't present an issue to the locals and shouldn't be an issue with the Chain of Demand unless there's a safety issue of possibly hampering a soldier because of bad location on gear or poor sheath.

If one could backtrack the thinking involved, it would probably be seen that
the knife question is an extension of the Uniformity of Equipment policies
that all U.S. Branches of service have. Such policies are sometimes mis-
interpreted by people who have been taught that "If Uncle Sam wanted you to
think, You'd have been issued a brain".
Some common sense usually enters into it though, and most C.Os don't much care if
troops cary personal knives, especially in line units.

I believe you are right about that! :)

I've sent several over there, and I hope this isn't the case. My knives aren't intended as weapons. One soldier told me they hunt doves on the base with wrist rockets and barbecue them. He wanted my knive to butcher the doves.

Interesting thread. The last knife we sent over to Iraq was a 10 inch filet knife. We are still trying to figure that one out. A lot of what has been ordered from us by people (either military or contract) stationed in Iraq has been smaller hunting knives; 3.5 inch drop point, stag scales, that sort of thing.
We make a field/combat knife, for people who might need a good knife, that we received help on from some guys that currently do that sort of stuff. It has a 5 inch blade, is light weight, with no corners or skull crushers and sharp as...... well, as we can get it. The guys that have given us feed back have said not to change a thing, so we don't. They designed a really practical knife. With this knife, we wanted to provide exactly what they wanted and a lot of the limitations were controlled by their jobs and what they already had to carry. The 5 inch blade was a CO decision "so as to not be intimidating" and seems to be a fairly common limitation from what we hear. With all that is going on, I really hope and pray that our troops and others are allowed to carry the best tools they can get, to do the job they have to do, and if that involves gutting a dove or two, more power to them.
