Around the House Knife

When I'm lounging around the house at night or on the weekends i'm usually in my gym shorts or pajama pants. I'd like to get a knife to wear around the house.

Yes, I'm looking for a reason to purchase a new Spyderco. :)

Considering Native 5 FRN
Manix 2 FRN
Delica
UKPK

Give me your thoughts on what you use!

Sweats or gym shorts for me and, rather than carry a knife, I keep a number of them strategically placed around the house. At the moment:
Living Room - Orange Autonomy on the table next to my recliner, Malachite Kiwi on the table next to the sofa.
Kitchen - Knife block full of Spyderco Kitchen Sharps
Den - Centofante Memory on my main computer desk, LH Military on my workbench
Spare Bedroom - Moran Drop Point (orange)
Bedroom - Jigged Bone Kopa on nightstand
Bathroom - BRK 1st Generation Native on the vanity
Laundry - FRN Stretch on wall mounted magnet
Garage - Tenacious on pegboard with other tools

I hate to be that guy, but more often than not I reach for the kitchen shears to do most of the cutting tasks around the house.
But for opening parcels and small jobs I grab my N690 Squeak or the BD1 UKPK sitting right next to it.
They're cheap and they'll handle just about anything I need a knife to do and if I need something bigger I grab one of my fixed beater blades. No need to clean adhesives and other mung off my usual edc. House knives get cleaned only when I'm feeling extra ambitious.

Deacon is on to something. I'm always looking for an excuse for another knife, but I've run out of pockets!

But I digress... My vote is for the Native 5 LW. I do believe it's my favorite pocket knife because it's super light, relatively small in the pocket, but it fills my large hands. Most uses around the house don't require a long blade, but to me, grip is always important.

Dragonfly.

Disappears in pocket and lightweight so not a bother for no-belt pants.

Mine are most of the Salt series (Salt I, Tasman and Dragonfly) as they are ultra light, and I can leave them dirty, put them in the dishwasher or forget about them being wet/humid (shower, maybe sweat, kitchen, fruit cutting, etc.) as they won't ever rust.

Another one I carry around when off-work is the Lil' Matriarch because it carries so nicely and it's the best mail/envelope/plastic bag opener I have

Until then I think I will either go with the UKPK or a Spydie Edge Salt. :)

My around the house knife is a pacific salt. I have an extra black one that I originally purchased as a donor for a blade swap with my yellow one, but the leftover result was also a great around the house knife. As mentioned above the salt series is lightweight and worry free, so it can be "rode hard and put away wet" so to speak.

I think these are all great choices along with, as mentioned, the Dragonfly. You can't really go wrong with any of them. Of your final choices (UKPK & SE Salt) I think I'd go with the UKPK. When I'm in light shorts or sweat/PJ pants and want carry a knife around I tend to lean toward something that's light and has a wire clip. UKPK works well for that.

I also think that whatever you choose, a FRN and a wire clip is the best choice for shorts/sweats. Dragonflies and Manix's would be my go-to choices, but the tasman salt is just too good not to include in the mix. Just buy a bunch, and stash one in each pair of clean shorts, then you will be set - and yes, I know that means having a bunch of knives :D

in my pj's its either, a kiwi 4 or ukpk, you won't even notice there in your pocket.

of what you have posted I would say the Native. However, for that use, have every consider a small neck knife like the Brous SS?

Hey for what its worth, the SS V1 is on sale today for 79 bucks shipped. Deal of the century IMO..

My around the house knife is often the overkill Spyderco K2... can't carry it in my city, so in the house it is!

I'm getting pretty excited for the new Para3. I think it would be a great mid-range do anything blade.

Or if neck knives don't bother you like they do me, check out the new SpyderEdge ARK. Thinking high usefulness in a very small lightweight package.

+1 for the Dragonfly, its the perfect knife for when you need something light in your gym shorts or sweats around the house. I will sometimes also find myself with a Delica or even a Manix 2 LW though, depending.

I "Home Carry" a Manix 2 LTW in black, it's about perfect. It's light in my basketball shorts (3oz!!!), sits flat, the wire clip is perfect because it's the only one my dogs haven't caught on and pulled it out of the pocket. It's in the not too big and not too small category.

I've tried others- PM2 (too blocky), Cold Steel Recon 1 (A momentary lapse of sanity, it's too heavy), Delica (the blade was just a little short), Endura (too long), an even lighter than the Endura Cold Steel Broken Skull (too long but only weighs 3oz with a 4.10" blade:eek:), a G10 Manix 2 (too heavy), and finally tried the LTW version that I carry at home every day now. People home carry guns, I thought maybe I was a weirdo for also home carrying a folder with a pistol. I guess I'm not alone! It's a trial and error thing really. I even sleep with it in my pocket, it's the only one that didn't disturb my sleep. Best thing to do is try a bunch of different folders if you can, it really is a very personal comfort kind of situation. I'm not sure I was much help but hopefully I gave you enough ideas.
