So, I got to looking at all the vintage watches/parts I purchased to do my "Complexity of Time" Series of writing pens (See photo below) and had the wild haired idea to do the same thing with knife scales. Granted, poly resin is not the most scratch resistant but it will be a show piece if anything. Thought I would cast a thin layer of black resin as a backdrop then watch parts, then clear resin. Should be a about 1/4" thick. Even thought of a name: "Slice of Time" Whaddya think of the idea?

I like the idea :) I'm curious what you'll use for molds for the scales, as I've got some resin now and was planning some clear scales. Still thinking of packaged things I can use the plastic from for a mold.

Clever idea. One thought... instead of marking the hour of your birth, consider instead doing a custom set for someone else that marks a special time in their lives. Also consider using a more contemporary watch that has a day/date display so you could mark a specific occasion more accurately.

Yep, did that for a lady who had me make her one from her grandparents watches. Set them to their birthdates.

I went to an art supply store and bought a two part latex rubber liquid. Made a form out of some corian, glued another block of corian that matched the blank size then sprayed the whole thing with Pam cooking spray. Poured the two part mix...waited 6 hours and presto...I had a resin form.

You can used any cheap plastic container as a mold because as the poly resin cures, it shrinks and pulls away from the sides.

Aww, now you have messed up my Christmas present for my watchmaker. I showed him the photo of your pen, and he went nuts. Old watch parts are sitting around the shop by the box full, so I thought to make a case opening knife with a cast handle. I was going to engrave the blade "Time to go to work". I haven't started yet, so you go ahead :)

How bout a collaboration? Seems like the popular thing among the big name makers:) Besides a case knife is pretty small...shouldn't take long and would be a good test of the concept

My plan was to coat the handle in a layer of black plastic, and attach the pieces to that. Then cast the clear resin over the whole assembly. I planned on using a cylindrical silicone rubber mold that the blade went through.
When I get it going, I'll post some photos. Handmade Christmas presents for me get delivered in Jan-Feb, as Nov-Dec are crazy busy.
