Article: 24 hours with only a knife and survival kit

stick the rat on the fire for 30 seconds to burn away the plague? that's certainly an interesting way to look at it.

Yeah, I read that also.

Actually, when the rat dies the fleas that carry the plague jump off looking for something else to feed on since dead rats don't pump blood anymore. If your in the neighborhood they jump on you to eat. Of course that will give you the plague. Bon appetite. :D

Words cannot describe the fear civilian authorities put forward when it comes around to cougars (well, mountain lions around here).
Interesting. I live in Albuquerque, which has a decent amount of mountains and wilderness in the surrounding vicinity. We have mountain lions here; we have mountain lions and bears, but trail heads simply warn people in a normal-sized lettering that such critters exist and to be wary, etc. Perhaps part of the warning you encounter stem from the lion attack on the mountain biker a couple years ago??
Makes me wonder why they want to instill so much fear, uncertainty and doubt into the minds of people who would actually dare to visit the open spaces ....
Thats a very valid question...

Boggy ground around a waterhole? Just pull them up and cut the roots or cut a digging stick.

I found such onions around a similar kind of waterhole in a California wilderness and pulled them up and cut the roots. Everything is good to eat but the roots and those can be washed and cooked too.

i mean when i go out in the wilderness i have a large knife like the srk a becker or swamp rat and then i have a smaller knife like my mora or the pendelton or my master hunter and a pocket knife or leatherman. a small first aid kit and a survival kit like doug ritters. i mean if you lose your knife your sol so i have a back up or two a mora a good knife but i would not want to put a baton to one a lot you want somthing a little sturdier likewise with when doing some intricate work you dont want to use a battle rat thats why i go large small and one in the pocket the moras make great neck knives by the way sorry if i talked your ear off

If they hadn't slept, the instructor could have taught some pretty cool stuff, but I'm getting the feeling that this was a feel good about yourself trip and not a learning experience.

I'm guessing many, if not all, of you are not city dwellers. Words cannot describe the fear civilian authorities put forward when it comes around to cougars (well, mountain lions around here).

Last spring a cougar was spotted in the woods next to my son's elementary school in western Washington. I was prepared for the worst and expected everyone to overreact. Instead the kids just brought home a note recommending that no one walk alone for the next few days while the big cat passed through the area. Every now and then common sense prevails although it's certainly getting rarer these days.

And any survival training that involves digging with a knife is certainly of questionable worth.
