I believe the list was compiled so wives/girlfriends, young people and metrosexuals have an idea what to buy "manly men" for Christmas. :D Most of my "twenty-something" students have no idea what a man SHOULD own or carry. The last time I whipped out my Tidioute #73 Scout to sharpen a student's broken pencil, he said "I asked you to sharpen it not murder it." Trust me, they need all the help they can get.
