I was just out walking my cattle fence and ran across this old blade. Any of you fellows got any ideas as to the origin of rusty piece of steel? It appears to still be pretty sound.

ray you should clean it up and put a handle on it and then make your own version of it....that'd be cool....ryan

Ray,are you sure that isnt a blade you pitched out into the woods years agothat you got mad at or something,I know their are a few out in the woods behind my house.

Can you tell which side was sharpened? If sharpened on the bottom as indicated in the picture, could it be some type of skinning blade? It is cool, clean it up and put a handle on it as re post pics.

Bruce, You and IG are the warmest. Actually I found this one only partially buried on one of the benches. I guess it may be close to being an artifact. That's the second knife I made almost 47 years ago when I was 14. The reason it looks so bad is it was in the shop when it burnt down plus it was also laid out in the weather for close to two years. Imagine it with a white ash handle and some wood burning on it. The ash was once part of my favorite baseball bat. Just trying to entertain myself with this thread. :D

I say you do a modern (as in how you would make that style today) take on it and then put it together with the bare blade above (a slight twist on what was already said). There's an interesting story behind the blade already, pair it up with a new knife and you'll have a story for generations.

Ray! That is almost exactly the shape of the brush hook we were talking about:eek:
That's eerie, man.
It's a little smaller, but it's a dead ringer. Must be an omen.

What a minute, wait a minute... this is unbelievable!!!

You are trying to tell us you were only 14, 47 years ago????

:p :D :p :D

That's what he's been doing for the last 47 years!

Good one Nick. The SOB deserves it for setting us up for his personal entertainment.

Had me going. I'm a simple, gullible fool, easily led down the path. Ray I like the idea of doing a "mature" version of the knife too. I'd liked to have seen it before it burned, that would have been neat.

You're probably not far off that it's an artifact, since my suspicion is that it was something more than a short 47 years ago that you were a spry 14... You're not continuing to pull our legs or anything, are ya? How long ago did you really make that blade? 150, 200 years ago?

Nick, Just 47 years ago. Yah, the good old days.......... :D Actually I look at this blade and see some similarities to the work I do today. Those knives I made back then were a short lived passing fancy. I didn't realize it but I didn't get another interest in making knives till I was 47 years old except this time I got hooked. 47 must be the magic number since that was also the year I was born. Maybe I go buy a lotto ticket.

Dave, I have thought about cleaning this blade up and changing the tang and then see if I can reheat treat it. The steel was some my dad picked up at work. I remember it having a number but at the time it really didn't matter to me but I do remember it hardening up. The blade really isn't in that bad a shape.

I've been looking for something easy to work on. I think I just found it.
