First this is not advertising, and has been pre-approved with Spark for this forum.

888 Knives R Us needs a new logo. We also need to completely rebuild our site, and change our shopping cart, and redo most of our images, and so on and so forth. The company logo is like a corner stone for many of the things above so we want to get going quick. So we are asking for your help. DESIGN US A NEW LOGO. IF YOUR DESIGN IS SELECTED YOU WILL RECEIVE $50 STORE CREDIT (Subject to rules listed below).

WHAT WE WANT: A eye-catching logo that is not tacky, flashy, or junked up. It can incorporate our name, or not, afterall what does a swoosh have to do with shoes? We would prefer that the name be included or referenced somehow though. The design should be clean and legible/recognizable from 150-600 pixels. It should also be legible/recognizable in halftone, greyscale, and color.

HOW TO SUBMIT: Post the design here at 300-500 pixels wide, or if you can't post images, email them to suds32@netzero.net and I will post it here if you win. If you can post images here please don't email the designs to me unless I request. Feel free to submit more than one design.

PRIZE RULES: The winner will receive $50 store credit for in-stock items only. There is no cash value for this credit. Credit may be use for items in excess of $50 and the credit will be deducted from the price of the item. Credit must be used within 90 days from the date it is posted in the thread that you are the winner.

888KnivesRUs.com will retain all rights intellectual and otherwise to the selected design.

That's it folks. Get started.

edited for spelling and rights to the design.

We'll keep it going until we get one that excites us, or we get tired of waiting and design it ourselves...

Thanks for asking, as I forgot to include that in the post.

OK. I'll go first, especially since we can submit more than one design.

Clean and crisp design fulloflead... keep em coming... I do like that one.

Hit the "Browse" button at the bottom of your post.
If you're using a Macintosh you might have some trouble. Try using a gif instead of a jpg.

If you continue to have trouble, email the image to me and I'll post it for you along with your user name.

Of course, I'll mess up your logo first so I'll win!:D
Just KIDDING!

But seriously, I'll help you out if you can't post it.

Keep in mind that 888 Knives also offered the option of emailing the logo directly to them so you COULD do that instead.

to post a picture:
first you must get some webspace. this webspace needs to be something provided by your ISP most likely, because free webhosts like angelfire.com, geocities.com, and tripod.com will not allow external linking. External Linking is linking to an image from a location NOT originating from the place the image is stored.

I suggest reading up on your Internet Service Providers terms of agreement. Some give you free webspace with your monthly fee. This is pretty much what you have to hope for if you want to post images for free online.

After you get your webspace, you'll need to upload the image to that webspace. If your ISP provides free webspace they will most likely have a howto upload FAQ somewhere as well. This will tell you how to upload. A basic generic answer is to get a FTP client(downloads.com will have several listed for free), connect to your webspace(how to do this WILL be listed by whoever you get webspace from) upload the file(like downloading, except your sending the file instead of recieving).

Next you make a html "hyperlink" to the image. Example:
|img src=http://members.cox.net/ianj/images/knives/m161.jpg|
replacing the "||" with "[]"

Doing so yields:
<img src=http://members.cox.net/ianj/images/knives/m161.jpg>

Not true. I'm sorry.
Even though it's a GOOD IDEA to have a webspace if you're going to post a lot of photos on the web, Bladeforums doesn't make you work that way. Bladeforums is very generous and stores your pictures for you. (That's why there's a limit on the size of the pictures you can post.)

Bladeforums will store photos on their site for you and you don't have to pay for it. That's part of why this forum slows down sometimes - because the hosts are kind enough to allow you to upload pictures to their server for your posts and a LOT of people, including me, just LOVE that!

If you have a picture (usually a jpeg or a gif) on your hard drive. you just have to use the "Browse" button at the bottom of your Post Page when you hit "Reply". You'll have to wait a little while after you hit "Submit" because what happens is that your photo is then transfered over the internet onto the Bladeforums server and then appears in your thread as long as it isn't bigger than the limits set by the forum Host. It stays there for a while until the thread gets really old.

Don't sweat it. I think the limit is around 800x600 pixels and as long as you stay under that you should have no problem. Sometimes Macintosh encoding can give you a little trouble, but I can help you with that.

First,

smokadaweed, needs to become a gold member to directly post pictures, fulloflead.

I suggest just sending it to fulloflead to upload for you.:)

Ahhhhh! I did not know that!

I guess I should not take my Gold Membership for granted! I thought the only difference was my permission to sell knives in the Sell section. I guess it is more than that! Gee. I guess I'll make sure I renew when the time comes even though I dont sell very often.;)

Yes, by all means. I'll upload for people if I'm allowed to, especially if someone has a Macintosh like me and has had some problems with jpegs written out of Photoshop or Illustrator like I did until I figured it out.

If you have a Mac. Send me a tiff for me to convert myself or a giff for me to upload. A jpeg, most likely, won't work with Macintosh encoding.

(In the spirit of competition. Of course, I'd REALLY like the win the $50 credit myself!:D )

But, may the best man/woman win!

Not to be a spoil sport but it seems to me that a logo design is worth more than $50 store credit. I realize that 888Knives isn't a big company and all but it's that's still very low pay/barter.

However, it takes two to tango so if there are people willing to do it for that low a fee then I guess there's no real foul, as long as people do it with open eyes.

Good point. It would cost around $1000 or more to get a professional Graphic Artist to do it unless they got some low bidder straight out of community college or something. On the other hand, they're only blind submissions. You're not meeting with 888 Knives Owners to get their input or trying to read their mind on what they want or dealing with multiple proofs and last-minute changes...

They're just PICKING one. People are going to enter the contest even though you're right that $50 isn't much considering what they're getting. If you or I don't enter then somebody else will and win. So, I'm in. I'm just not going to bust my hump for a $50 gift certificate. I'll just toss a couple together and post them and see what happens.

Just what I was thinking :)

Here's my submission

888-Knives.jpg

How about:
knife.gif

The original (top) is a vector image, so you can make it as big as you want, without any loss in quality. You can easily spruce it up a little by, for example, adding a bevel in Photoshop (bottom). If you want to see a larger version just let me know.
I have to agree with Grapevine though, $50 is too little. If you're interested, I'll let you have the logo for a CRKT S-2 (shipped to Sri Lanka...) ;) :D
