About Arto:
Arto, a small cutlery company with deep French roots, blends traditional craftsmanship and style with top-quality modern materials - handcrafting both regional style knives and their own unique designs. Arto knives will shortly be available stateside through a partnership with NeverUnder, LLC (based in CT) the US distributor for both Opinel and Forges de Laguiole. I am not affiliated with Arto or NeverUnder.
Arto History:
In the wake of WWII, Edouard Arthaud founded the company in central France (Auvergne, 1945). Initially focusing on flatware, they were early adopters of the telephone as a tool to reach affluent Parisian clients. Through the years they participated in the rebirth of the Laguiole style, and eventually launched the seahorse (hippocampe) as their trademark. In the mid-1990s, Arto was one of the six forefathers - instrumental in design and creation of the regional Thiers knife. In 2008 the companys reigns were passed to Cyril Gavinet. Shortly thereafter, the workshop was moved approximately one mile northeast from Thiers to more modern quarters in Monnerie-le-Montel. It was here that their current lineup of traditional and modern knives was penned - classical inspiration, modern execution.
Rouennais Origine: $SPF A traditional 18th century Normandy knife design updated by Arto. Handmade using traditional materials.
London Origine: $SOLD A traditional handmade barlow knife design executed by Arto.
