I have a few Cold Steel knives, and all are excellent work knives. They serve well in rotation. I am not married to the brand, don't care about LT, nor do I feel the deep emotional response to the brand and its activities.
Musing over a cigar the other day, I have to say I believe LT is a frickin' marketing genius. ANYTHING he does is cause for comment, rumor, smut, hearsay and speculation. Who in the knife world gets as much attention to himself and his products as LT? And it's all FREE!!! Amazing...
I can't think of another knife manufacturer/contractor/subcontractor , supplier, etc., that has been able to generate so much attention (what's the count now; 500+ posts) on the thread that was based almost entirely on negative speculation and conjecture. Partly based on LT's perceived personality (don't know how many of the bitter posters postulating on his schemes actually know him, had lunch with him, or even a cup of coffee) faults, his drive to hoodwink the American public, the huge debt of gratitude he owes to someone that bought a CS product and even the sneering that he doesn't represent the knife integrity of the proper, noble, knife community they know and respect.
Seriously, if you read that thread from start to finish it started out with some info and a few concerns. Then it morphed into a multiple conspiracy theories and even included opinions that LT should not have sold CS at all, but continued on as a debt, almost an unspoken contract he was responsible for to his public. Hilarious. Then he posted (wait... was it him?) a video to help clarify the s?it storm of rampant speculation to the future of Cold Steel. That video also became part of the dialogue for those in the know working hard to uncover LT's nefarious scheme to hurt the knife buying public.
Genius, I say. I can't think of any other man and his product that has ever generated more rapid and voluminous response. I am chuckling now thinking about LT's video. What if he looked intentionally nervous and uncomfortable so he could keep the rumor mill grinding away and add another hundred posts to the thread?
I would have thought most knife buyers would have simply said "how sad, another one bites the dust" and moved on to other products which seem to be released at record rates these days. But no, LT apparently knows what he's doing a lot more than I gave him credit for.
He should make this whole thing into a Jerry Springer type show. Betcha folks would line up as guests.
