For informational purposes only & NOT in any way disparaging HI's products or looking to leave HI & go Tora, or starting a brand war-

Can anybody give me impressions of the current Tora products?
Quality, materials, durability, etc.?

(You can post anonymously if you're concerned about your car getting egged or your dog spray-painted blue by admitting you've touched anything but an HI. :) )

I'm just seeking info on how their stuff differs from or compares to HI.

What other khukuri specific forum would be?
I'm asking here because you guys know your stuff.

Strictly seeking information, not looking for a "Which is best?" battle.
What's different & how between the two?

If inappropriate, disregard. :)

Of the three Ived owned two had serious heat treatment and blade profile issues. I wouldnt buy another one.

I don't know where would be an appropiate place/forum, maybe a mod will be along and suggest somewhere.

I agree with Ndog, I don't think this forum is a good place to have this discussion.

I don't think it should even be discussed in the BF at all. Maybe another Forum site altogether.

OK, pardon me.
Thought the Cantina was appropriate for discussion & didn't know other makers' khukuris were prohibited.

I posted the question in General Knife Discussion, so please disregard here.

Sorry man its not my place to be moderator so dont move on my account. I hear casual mention of KLO's etc and we get away with that but when it comes to another brand specifically to be reviewed in the Himalayan Imports subforum then Im pretty sure the lock comes out of a moderators pocket. I may be wrong? Happened once back in spring of 1961

Spring of '61 was tough on me, too.
Busted one of my all-time greatest Christmas gifts, the toy version of Chuck Connors' Rifleman levergun.

Had to wait YEARS to grow up to where I could buy a real one. :)

Knowing how sensitive some of the makers' sub-forums can be at Blade Forums, I've bent over backwards to be accommodating & avoid antagonizing anybody in recent threads here.

Flat gave up on the Busse Bunch.
Never again.

Did not mean to create a problem in this thread, just seeking info as a personal education thing, from people very dedicated to the khukuri & very knowledgeable about them.

If I was inappropriately doing so, then this one's done & I'll see what I can get outa General. :)
I don't mind being advised of an etiquette breach.
It was not intended to be one.

I'm kind of sensitive myself, I sometimes bawl my eyes out when Mr. Karda drops the hammer of thor on me for an errant violation of rules.
I trys to be good, I really do. But a rabble rouser I reckon just has to rabble rouse I guess. Don't mean I enjoys the chastisement.
Traumatizing it is.

But I do enjoys a nice Perch supper with fried potatoes and a splash of Ginger Ale on the side.

I don't necessarily think this is the wrong place for the topic. The Cantina is typically where non-HI products are discussed and it seems in the past there were no taboo topics as long as common courtesy was followed. Bad mouthing HI (or any other product or person) would, of course, likely qualify as not following common courtesy, but a frank and open discussion wouldn't seem to have been an issue in the days of Uncle Bill. In fact, I believe UB was involved in multiple threads where other khukuri vendors were discussing their products here. I think his main concern was respect for and by all parties involved. I wasn't here then, but that's what I gather anyway. The OP has chosen to move the topic, so that's done. The problem is that many on BF don't follow "general", where a post can quickly end up on page 3 and never be seen. Many just check their common hangouts and leave.

I do not follow such and never have, but i do gather much bad mouthing and inaccurate info posted by other makers and their fans on sites, youtube, and etc....no idea of this maker mentioned involved in such, but i can see where many here would rather move on to another subject, as otherwise it invites a flame war, rabid fans dropping in to post dissent, and can just get ugly real fast.........a simple way around this is to request info via PM.....if in doubt as to inducing a riot, go backchannel.....

As for lack of knowledge on others, years back there was junk and then there was Himalayan Imports as far as most knew....and Yangdu's outfit would take a $100 donation and let kami's spend it on a day off and feast where a few homeless were invited to feast....why else would i look anywhere else at all?......

I was sorry to hear that the subject was prohibited here, had hoped for a strictly INFORMATIONAL discussion on the Tora products & how they differ from HI's.

NOT a brand war, NOT a which is best.
In asking there was no slight to HI or any suggestion that HI was not "good enough", or that I was seeking better elsewhere.
I simply wanted information.

I didn't move it from choice, in looking for that info I posted the question in General, where it quickly sank with no response & was on Page 3 by the time I went to bed last night.
Pretty much what I expected. :)

I would still like that info, if it doesn't violate a forum rule for Cantina subjects.

Don't need commentary on Tora's owner, I know he's not well liked here.
Don't need any defense of HI, explanation of why HI does what it does or is what it is.
Don't need any "HI is better" stuff, I'm not arguing that or suggesting in any way that it's not.

As I mentioned earlier, my recent acquisition of two new HI khukuris has prompted me to do a Kindle project; that'll include samples starting at the bottom with Atlanta Cutlery, working up through three Nepalese suppliers, and including at least two domestic brands.

When I do a product review, I like to know what I'm talking about, to be as accurate & informative as possible for readers not familiar with the subject under discussion.

I'm familiar with HI, its quality, and its philosophy.
I've also said before that my first was bought nearly 25 years ago, from Bill, with a 30-minute phone call, long before the operation moved to Nevada.
Since then I've dropped in & out of this forum, and acquired other HI blades.
I can't determine model, exact weight, or exact length, blindfolded, just by handling them, as many of you guys can, but I do know the company. :)

On the other hand, I know nothing about Tora's products aside from what I can find on the Internet.
I'll have to acquire a representative sample from them, but I'm looking for informed opinions & experiences from those who may have tried a Tora & moved on.

If such discussion, within those narrow parameters, is permissible, I'd like to continue it.
Info ONLY on the differences between the products, and user experiences with Tora's products, please.
This is not bashing, just education for me.

If not permissible, then I won't push it any farther. :)

My sincerest apologies for crunching your thread Denis. It was not my intention. Must be ok because its still here? Please pardon my ignorance.
I dont have anything by Tora so Ill shut up for more than one reason;) Carry on.

Me included. Sincerest apologies. Obviously it's ok, since the mods haven't locked it up.

No apologies needed, I just didn't realize it could be an issue.
Trying to get along here, no intention of creating any problems.

Looks like not a lotta people with direct Tora experience anyway, and thanks to Dirtbiker for his input.

And that's perfectly fine.

The purpose of the Kindle project, totally aside from enabling me to pay off the villa in Majorca, is to show readers, in one centralized info source, a good representative range of what's out there in the khukuri world.

That includes features, materials, quality, pricing, and performance, in photos & text.

It's not projected at people who already know it all, or who already have their minds made up.
It's projected at those who don't know the difference between a $35 AC & a $175 HI, as an example, but might be interested in jumping in with cash in hand if the lines & lore of a khukuri appeal.
The idea is to give them an informed basis for deciding which direction to toss that cash.

My primary field is guns, but I've done knife reviews here & there for several years.
Amongst all that, while I may have my own personal favorites, I have to put that aside & give each sample a fair eval on its own merits, while fitting it into a piece of the overall picture in the case of a multiple-item piece like this one'll be.

If anybody has helpful Tora info & doesn't mind posting, great; if nobody has anything helpful to post & doesn't post, that's OK too.
