As much as I hate to say this about my new BK4.....

.....which I just received in the mail. I'm a bit disappointed. My first Becker, the 5, is everything I expected. My 15 is all a small utility knife should be. I love my 9, of course....goes without saying. And the BK2 is so unabashedly beastly, ya' can't help but love it to death. I thought the 4 would round out my Becker stable, but....It just seems a bit....well....wimpy. In hand, feels kinda light and insubstantial. Am I the only one feeling this way? I guess I'll reserve final judgment until I use it a bit. Shrug

Definitely give it some use! I almost sold mine after a short outing with it, but decided to take it as my only knife for a weekend at the cabin with some friends. By the time the weekend was over, I had fallen in love with it and 2 of the guys with me bought one as soon as we found a wifi signal they could use.

It was used for making kindling, cooking wood (we cut firewood into about 1" squares to heat the cooktop), and processing a couple of dead pines for the campfire.

Yes you are alone...I need a back up if you want to get rid of it.

I have a bk4 on order, I don't envision it to be a big chopper, I'm hoping the bk21 will fill that role.
The bk4 looks to be an ergo bk9, less combat, more campy, should work good as a family camp blade for me.

I, hereby invoke the 30 day challenge upon you.

Hunh....I thought it was supposed to be a chopper.

It won't take that long, not to mention that I think this so-called 30 day challenge is cute/fun , entertaining for some, but utterly unnecessary, to determine the value of a knife. . shrug

I think it's a chopper like the bk9, I thought it was going to be bigger until I handled one though, pictures can be deceiving.
So I consider it a chopper just not a big chopper.
I think of the some of the large knives from Busse (10-11" blades) as large choppers but am hoping the bk21 will fill this spot at 1/7 the price.

I'm with ya. The 4 just doesn't speak to me.

I've fondled it a few times at the local gun shows and ... meh. Then I pick up the 9 and 5 and ... ahhh!

Of course, I just got that RBK that spikebot passed on ... Wow!

I'll probably get a 4 eventually, like, from Dex, when he takes them in trade on new RBKs. ;)

I felt similarly when I first got my 4. But now it is by far my favorite Becker. To say this knife has a learning curve is an understatement, but it really can do just about everything. Learn the "snap-cut" chopping technique, and it chops as well as my 9 did (which I got rid of since I prefer the 4). It can also do fine carving tasks better than the 9, imho.

Get out in the woods with your 4, keep working with it. That's what I did and now my 4 is my go-to woods knife.

I'll admit when I recieved my first BK4 I was a little underwhelmed.
I was expecting a larger, more chop heavy blade.
It was only after some real use, and the magic of a convexed edge, that my doubts were permanently laid to rest.

The Machax is an incredibly useful tool!
You hear a lot of folks say the BK7 and BK10 would be their "one Becker" do-all type knife.
For me the Machax is that "one" Becker. It can do it all!
Seriously though...it's not going to out chop the BK9. But it chops well.
It's not the 1/4" indestructable BK2. But I use mine hard and I've never seen one break.
The Machax is a wood processing machine! An all-around outdoors knife.
And it's way more nimble in the hand than one might think, so it lends itself very nicely to the finer tasks.

If I'm at camp, give me a Machax. There is no equal.

Use yours for a weekend and I'm sure you'll agree!

I agree with apon arrival it felt light in hand, but after clearing some brush & trees while cutting trails & places to camp for a week.....it is my favorite knife to carry around my property & any time I head into the woods/bush. Take the time to learn when to flick your wrist & you will be happy with what the 4 can do without all the extra ounces. If you do end up not wanting to keep it, as you've seen, any Becker resells easy enough.

An EDC challenge???
Well, he probably can't "edc" it, but he can actually use it at least once a day.

It's just motivation. Plus, I don't know a thing about you. You may, or may not be the type of person that actually uses its knives. How's about you give it a try before hating on it... I happen to love the Machax. It's the one blade that teaches people that .25"+ stock isn't necessary to make a great chopping blade.

I purchased a 4 some time ago, and thought it too small, and sold it without even using it. Decided not too long ago to get another, and give her a go. I was not disappointed. It's a hell of a sweet blade. It can do anything.

Clearly, you just need some pink scales. :D
