As much as I hate to say this about my new BK4.....

Sorry, I understood your meaning. I just wish there was a sarcasm font I could have used for my smart remark.

My best buddy and I have prayed for a sarcasm font. I'm in Idaho (which needs a sarcasm font of it's very own) and he's in Georgia (not gonna say ANYTHING sarcastic here).

Georgia is sarcasm personified.

I'll admit when I recieved my first BK4 I was a little underwhelmed.
I was expecting a larger, more chop heavy blade.
It was only after some real use, and the magic of a convexed edge, that my doubts were permanently laid to rest.

The Machax is an incredibly useful tool!
You hear a lot of folks say the BK7 and BK10 would be their "one Becker" do-all type knife.
For me the Machax is that "one" Becker. It can do it all!
Seriously though...it's not going to out chop the BK9. But it chops well.
It's not the 1/4" indestructable BK2. But I use mine hard and I've never seen one break.
The Machax is a wood processing machine! An all-around outdoors knife.
And it's way more nimble in the hand than one might think, so it lends itself very nicely to the finer tasks.

If I'm at camp, give me a Machax. There is no equal.

Use yours for a weekend and I'm sure you'll agree!

I will totally agree with Jonny here.

You guys are such sorcerers!
I read all these testimonials and see all these pics and the desire wells up till I just gotta have a 4 or I'll bust!
Then I handle one and *poof* the spell is broken.
Then I'm back here and my head starts spinning again. ;)

I "handled" one at my first Gathering and was unimpressed. Looked smaller in real life than the interwebz. Didn't use it. BIG mistake. Bought one to help a brother out, thinking maybe I should give it a try.....and when it came I still had that feeling of "man, this thing is NOT as big as it looks in the pictures!". But now....now, I owned it, and I really don't believe in safe queens. Started using it to start some backyard fires, gave it a go using it as a drawknife....in short, started to understand the love of the Machaxen. Goes on my pack more than my 9. Light and quick and punches well above it's weight class. Versatile. Funny looking, a little, but I fixed that:

I have realized that I love the BK-4....so much so that at the prize table at the spring Gathering, I picked up another. Now, I know that not everyone is going to positively vibrate with this blade. So if no one else takes it off your hands if you decide you don't like it.....I'd be OK with a third one. Then I could keep it strapped to a couple different packs and not have to move it around. Give it a good, unbiased go and then let us know what you think.......

Where did you find the bk14 scales? I've only seen the new ones available for full size beckers

Those were ceracoated by a member K9-Handler.
They were originally orange or black.
He hasn't been around in some time though...

The only thing that threw me about the 4 was that I was thinking Kukri.
Its not a Kukri. It uses some of the geometry of a kuk, but its really meant to be lighter and more practical to carry than even a traditional full size kuk, which is generally much thinner and lighter than people think. Once I got over expecting it to be larger, and got the hang of using it, it was really a great tool.

Yeah, it is. I enjoyed giving your old one a bit of a swing at the Northeast Spring Beckerhead Gathering. I do see the value of the thinner Kabar version though. It's lighter and still quite capable.

Perhaps you haven't seen my video????? http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/959366-Better-than-a-Machax . I can't post a link because my computer doesn't work on BladeForums anymore.

Doc

Correction: this link worked although I can't post a link in the usual manner.

Aha! I saw this thread and I was like "Okay where's Doc on this one?!" :D

The BK4 is one of the knives I always have in my Jeep. I like my 9 a little more for ease of sharpening, but man, the 4 is so versatile! I'd definitely use it a bit like others have said.

See!!! She gets it.
