I have found a 30" diamater diamond blade that looks like the kind thay use to cut to road with. its allmost 1/4 thick and has no rust. the man wants 80 bucks for it. this thing is massive and would supply my knife needs for a long time. but the question is this, is it made from any good steel, i would gess L6 but because its made to use with water and there is no rust what do you think. it has some numbers on it and here thay are.

thanks so much for your help and any quick responce would be great because i dont know how long it will be for sale.

I have a stack of them on the shop side. They seem to be a tough and shock resistant steel with low carbon content. Mark Williams had some a few years ago. I think he found that they were not usable for blades.

so not worth the money. such a shame because this saw blade sells new for $1200.00 how i wish it was a good steel. is there any test i could do in the store to tell anything about the steel with out destroying it.

Take your $80 and buy some L6 or 1095 from Admiral steel. Though it may not yield the same amount of steel you will know for sure what you have. Lacking a portable spectrum-analyzer anything you can do at the shop would only give you a SWAG.

go to almost any paving company - they will usually have a whole stack of used blanks that typically go in the scrap bin.

Years ago, I found these diamond blades wouldn't harden up for a good knife blade but I'm sure they're a few exceptions.

Not L6 but old sawmill blades did make a good knife, back in the day :D

And new saw mill blades work great! If they are Simmonds, good chance they are 1080+2% N. bruce

if you are looking for free steel, go to a john deere dealership and see if they have any cultivator discs with this sn. n214190. they are made with 1075 steel and are close to 17" in diamater when replaced. a friend of mine just told me he has 32 of them for me. a plasma cutter, right angle grinder or air powered cutoff wheel is needed to cut blanks out since they rockwell at 56c already.
