How about 550 paracord? Even if you are caustic enough to rot it out, it's cheap enough that you can just make a new one when necessary.

Get yourself one of those hollowed out fake rocks and keep a key in that outside close to the door.

John, I use these for quick clips on my keys, much more secure that the spring loaded quick releases and take up less space.

That's what I use to and they last! Or you could go to your closest hardware store and get a snap similar to that in the hardware section and they offer different sizes too. I use mine because when the keyring is on my hip I know where my keys are. Nothing like a little self security.:)

The same people make the fake poo poo hollowed out.:D

FAKE ,SCHMAKE!! I use REAL poo to hide it under. You gotta really wanna get into my place. Just remember to "refresh" every other day or it will dry up, shrink, and possibly expose a corner of the key. Glad I could help- Kev

It sounds like the key somehow jumped off of the keychain, not that the entire chain jumped ship. I would second the motion towards paracord for a cheapy, or just get an 18" length of ball chain. (or whatever you call the stuff they make ceiling fan pull chains and bank pen-keepers out of.)

If you want something like what stjames and Cindy use for their keys, and are near the ocean, drop into your local West Marine and pick up a Wichard snap hook or snap swivel.

Best of both worlds = pull out the innards of some paracord and thread a small ball chain through it, just incase someone grabs ahold of the cord and tries choking you or you somehow get caught on something, the chain will snap but will otherwise hold your stuff and not look foo-foo.

Haha foo foo.

*Edit* I screwed up on the quote.

I locked my keys in the car once and after that I decided to put my spare keys in my wallet taped to an old Card.
Hope that helps,

You really should carry two house keys. Aside from the chance of loosing one, the house key is one of the keys you use the most. Eventually, it's gonna fatigue and break off in the lock. If you've got a second on ya', you can just let yourself in the back door.

Take an old phone card or some other plastic card, cut the approximate shape of your key out of the middle, put a spare key (they don't cost much) in the cut-out. Cover both sides with packing tape. And put it in your wallet.

Aren't you smart. What if you forget to refresh and somebody comes along with a golf club to see how far they can 'drive' that dried up terd? That happening, the key is exposed only to be turned into schrapnel that hits your leg after you run over it with a lawnmower? Some people!

Paracord around the neck without a breakaway device is a no-no. If it gets caught on something it'll tear your neck clean off.

I put a spare key in a small zip-loc freezer bag and buried it in the soil/peat moss fill of a larger flower planter on the patio.

I keep one clipped to the collar of my outside 100 lb + German Shepard, tryin' take it if the dog don't know you.;)

I don't carry a house key. We got in and out of the garage door, and use our built-in Homelink in our vehicles.

I made copies of my keys. I put the originals in the zippered change compartment of my wallet. I use the copies or spares as my working keys. That way the originals never get worn out.
