ASH - Skinny or CG?

As I understand it, the Skinny ASH has a thickness of .197" and CG version has a .220 thickness. I'd like to purchase an ASH. Which would you recommend for a general type (tough) user... a companion... a good belt knife for hiking and camping.

Thanks.

The CG version is actually .32

I personally really like the ASH1's in .220" thick. An LE or one of the recent blades released at shows are really nice. IMO the different thicknesses available on them make them feel like completely different knives.

Good luck.

Went through the same dilemma.

Wound up buying both - CG at .32" and Skinny at .19".

Sold my CG and kept the Skinny ASH - it feels light and great in my hand and I have no doubts it can handle WHATEVER I throw at it.

The combat grade at .32" was just too thick for my tastes, although it cut like a scalpel. I also didnt like carrying it on my belt...

Like oeser said, there are a bunch that are at the .22" in thickness which may be perfect for you... I would still keep my skinny ash over this as I really like them thin.

I think it all really comes down to personal tastes.... how do you like em?

Regardless of what you choose, you really cant go wrong and will have a knife suited for the end of the world, and hard use (Realistically, you will be hard-pressed to break the Skinny). Its also easy enough to sell in the Exchange and recoup 99% of you money if you are really that unhappy.

Here is a comparison in thickness of .19" vs. .32" - as you can see the .32 really is a MONSTER!!!

I have the ASH in three versions: CG, LE, and Skinny.

I love them all for different reasons. CG feels spectacular in-hand -- the most solid-feeling knife I own. But it's really thick (measuring .33") -- great for tough jobs, but not great for fine cutting.

The LE is my favorite. At .22", it's a good cutter but still feels pretty solid in-hand. I still prefer the CG in-hand, but the LE is the more useful knife, except for the toughest challenges.

The Skinny is the price-performer. Really useful, everyday knife. At .20", it's very thick and tough by non-Busse standards. I prefer the CG and LE in terms of feel in-hand (all have Mags), but you can't go wrong with the Skinny.

If I had to pick one, I'd go with the LE. But the CG is uniquely tough and the Skinny is pretty close in feel and versatility to the LE.

+1

LE is the best of the bunch.

I'm still pulling for the Skinny!

Have four Busse at .22"-.25" and I still would prefer them all in .19"...

THIN IS IN :D:D:D

I have all of the thicknesses but I beat the skinny one more than any of them!!!

I have held both the CG and the skinny at the same time (thanks Oeser).

Completely different beasts. The CG is the tank. I don't notice how thick it is any more, until I actually held a skinny. The skinny floats in the hand.

I honestly would rather have the skinny. It is still going to be stupid tough (as evidenced by knifetests.com trying to break one).

The ASH-1 LE is my favorite Busse of all that own (e.g., BAD, Meaner, BATAC, STJAC, SNFO, NMSFNO, HG55).

I do prefer the blade shape on the SFNO and STJAC, but the ASH's fusion handle fits my hand better than the Special Forces or TAC handles. The ASH-1 LE is the Busse I'd hang onto if I could keep only one.

That said, a lot of HOGs here on the forum have a lot more experience with Busse knives than than I do. I've never put my paws on a FSH or old style Satin Jack or Badger. If this ever happens, the ASH-1 LE may slip to #2 ... but not for the moment!

CG for me, feels tougher than my FFBM did and my NMFBM. It's the most beastly small blade i've ever held. I love that knife.

absolutely love my .32 ASH.

there's really not much like it, and it's a great all-arounder IMO.

that said, I love my BWM too and don't wish it were any thicker.

go figure, it really is all personal preference.

the phrase over-engineered always springs to mind on anything over .2 in INFI.

many hogs just love the fatties ! I find the supermodels more than do the job !!

Thin is definitely in! Skinny all the way.

I almost bought an ASH in Bama Clay once, but I was pretty sure that it was .220, and I wanted a true skinny.

I am almost always in favor of the skinner versions of any Busse knife. However, the ASH1 is one of only two exceptions for me. Somehow, the 0.22" version has a just right "feel" to it. You can't go wrong with either one.
The CG thickness is too much IMO.

Yeah, what MikeH said...:D

The Skinny will get the job done. Compared to non-Busse knives it is still plenty big. Depsite what some here will tell you, "yes" it will indeed chop when you need it to - perhaps needing a little more effort, but it will chop.

A 0.22 is really great also if you can find one for a reasonable price. I wouldn't include an LE/SE in that category as they tend to run quite a bit more. But if you have the dough, they are gorgeous blades.

P.S. MikeH - I'm waiting for Spark to change my username to avoid anymore confusion.

T, the one you held was actually a .22" version, so not a skinny. That blade was identical to an LE version. I really like thin as a general rule but that .22 just feels right to me.:cool:

I can't believe I still don't have a skinny ASH. Nevertheless my money is on the LE without a doubt.
