ASH vs. Skinny ASH

So hear lately I've been toying with the idea of selling off some non knife items on that evil auction site to possibly help fund a new piece of INFI and one of the knives I've been eyeing is the ASH 1. After doing a lil research it seems the ASH came in several different thicknesses with the Combat Grade ASH being the thickest at .32. Just curious for those who may own both, how does the CG ASH 1 feel in hand compared to the Skinny ASH? I don't mind extra thick and heavy knives mind you but most knives I've handled at this thickness and weight usually had 9"+ blade and .195 of INFI on the Skinny ASH seems pretty substantial already. For those who own both which do you prefer and what are the pros and cons of both in general (chopping, slicing etc the usual)?

To be honest the ASH/Skinny ASH are just 2 of the Busses I'm considering but they are high on my list if I can get the funds.

Thanks in advance for any input you Hogs give me :)

Don't forget the .22 versions either ... ;)

I really like both verisions but they really are very very different in hand. The .32 is to hell and back, the .18/9 is a real do'er. The reality is that you probably need to hold both to decide. My one and only ASH, that would be tough, it would be between a .22 and .32 that's for sure (I like the skinny lots as well). I would probably come down to a .32 but what a tough call.

I will go in the ground with a .32 in the box with me....."just in case" ...!!!

They are each their own beast entirely.

Chopping, combat grade .32

Everything else, skinny. Get it with black paper handles with satin finish. It will be an awesome addition to your kitchen knife block

.22 sabre ground for me. I've tried them all and I feel .22 is a nice compromise.

Ill have to go with the .32 ash. There is no other knife out there like it.

Own all three sizes and concur with above info. Skinny best for handling, CG great for chopping apart a motor vehicle if that's what's needed. .22 a swell compromise...;-)

.22" LE is my favorite, but the thicker CG is the most solid feeling Busse I've ever handled. Skinny is plenty sturdy and thick too but there's nothing like the in-hand feel of the bigger ones.

If you can afford it, try all three. Sell the two you don't prefer. Always able to sell an ASH1 here, or that other forum. Dammed near guaranteed either Andy or I will snap it up...;-)

Well... I have a Fat ASH snd its awesome... just grabbed that custom shop ASH from the Forums and its the sweetest feeling in the hand Busse IU own now!

Get Both! I need a skinny now... who has a Satin CS or LE new one they need a new home for?

I'd go with .18-.23 thickness range.
The .20 I have on loan at the moment is probably the best feeling in hand for me.

If you ever saw the d-test on the skinny, you know that there is no easy way to break it so everything thicker is just extra weight. I have two skinnies and none of the others though I have had both other sizes. Weren't the BIG ASH-1's .22 saber?

If I hadn't made my own perfect camp knife (for me) I would pick the skinny ASH over anything else that size. Feels great!

...then you got to decide what type of handles you want..
I got to hold two versions of the .32 at blade this year.
one with mags and one with regular handles.. Very different feels!
I prefer the non mags on the .32 but don´t know how I would like the skinnier models.

I have average sized mitts, and find the standard sized handles, on all knives, to be too narrow. Like having a substantial gripping area. Then decide on micarta or G10's. Good luck in your search!...;-)

I know you guys said Fat is the way to go as far as chopping but does the added weight make it significantly better at chopping than the Skinny ASH? Tbh I'm not really used to chopping with knives with blades under 7" but then none were .32 thick and weigh over 20 oz's either. How does either ASH compare to the TGLB at chopping?

Oh decisions decisions. Common sense says a Skinny ASH is more than enough knife but (and maybe it's just the Budweiser talking) a .32 thick, 12" hunk of INFI just sounds pretty swell too. Alas I'm getting ahead of myself as I don't even have the funds atm plus I dont even know if the shop has any ASH blanks left, not to mention a ASHBM or NMSFNO are also high on my want list too.

No CG ASH's in 22 but there were other satin ones made that are not LE's.
... Not entirely correct. Not sure they were sold as CG but there are a number of .22 coated (in what can be described as Combat Grade guise) ASH1s kicking around. A few have changed hands here in the EX. Not common, but they do exist.

I am not an expert but if I would get a knife for chopping I would go with a NMSFNO or bigger not an ASH-1. I have the 0.22 version in satin. I can see it can chop, but I would not say is ideal. I think it is the perfect camp knife. It would do everything well. I agree with Tin that I can see how the skinny can be a great kitchen knife.
