ASH vs. Skinny ASH

You will find a good used ASH1 here on the exchange much cheaper than through the CS. Just takes a little patience. I know. I have a hard time with that also...;-)

My .22 Ash is amazing. Chops surprisingly well for such a short blade and it slices and batons like a champ. Great all around knife.

I am not an expert but if I would get a knife for chopping I would go with a NMSFNO or bigger not an ASH-1. I have the 0.22 version in satin. I can see it can chop, but I would not say is ideal. I think it is the perfect camp knife. It would do everything well. I agree with Tin that I can see how the skinny can be a great kitchen knife.

I agree the NMSFNO or larger blade would make a superior chopper to the ASH. Thats why I was wondering if the extra weight of the Fat ASH really aids that much in chopping or if the Skinny ASH is comparable? The skinny ASH seems like it would make a great jack-of-all-trades type blade with the lighter weight. Truthfully when it comes to the ASH (Fat or Skinny) or the NMSFNO, I'm really torn on which one I want more atm. So much INFI and not enough money lol.

I was like you a few months ago. I jumped and got both. I did them in G10 and I am ok with the ASH-1 in g10, but I think the NMSFNO I should have gone with canvas. Oh well I guess I will use gloves. I will get a skinny ASH-1 to make it a kitchen knife I will use it more often. I hope I can get that one on G10 and with the BIG finish. Good luck on your decision it is not an easy one.

I also prefer bigger blades for chopping , although you chop with anything in a jam
, have chopped with my Infidu, Wasent ideal but it got the job done

My .22 sabre is Big Finish and I believe that was offered through a ganza a while back. I also have one of the 10 LE knock offs that were purchased by some guys on the forum, it's by far my favorite with the hand shaped tiger mocarta, but I'll never be able to use it.

For a dedicated chopper length beats thickness. If you are mostly into bushwacking go longer. If you want a more all-around blade the skinny ash should be great.

The skinny Ash is one awesome all around knife. It does have it's limits chopping but that's expected by its length. Basic 11 and a skinny ash and a AMS and FTW!!! Lol

With the quality of Bussekin steel, I find the thinner versions to be more than sufficient. If you are hiking/carrying, the Skinny will get the job done. Most normal people will look at it as a thick blade anyway. Its only here that folks refer to it as "thin". Same reason why I love the 1311. Long and lean allows me to work longer than with a thicker, heavier blade. Base camping, or stationary work then go for whatever you want.

There was a Blade Show Special Edition ASH and I think it was in 22. I could dig one out to see. As has been said before, it is an excellent compromise.

However, if I could have only one ASH version, it would be the skinny.

I say go with the Fat Ash-1 ---- not only does it feel amazing in your hand, but it looks stunning too. As far as chopping it's no so much a comparison of length vs thickness. It's more so length vs weight. In many cases weight accompanied with a tall blade height can out-chop a lighter blade with greater length. One example is how close the chopping capabilities are between the HHFSH vs RTAK2 ---- despite the RTAK2 being 2 inches longer, the HHFSH out chops it. You could easily bring the Fat Ash-1 and a folding saw (Silky Gomboy) and be fully covered for all ranges. Besides look at this thing . . .

Thanks a ton for the replies guys, much appreciated. Sadly I'm still no closer to deciding between Fat and Skinny. Just when I think I've decided to go with one thickness, someone replies and makes me think about the other. .22 seems like its definitely a good compromise but if the .22 thick ASH's are only offered in satin, it may be a bit out of my price range. This is probably a question best answered by a Busse crew member but is there any major price differences between a Fat and Skinny ASH?

Sounds like what you need is a BIG finish ASH-1.

The BIG finish .22 satin with black paper is what I have. It is a different kind of finish well under the regular LE satin price. BIG stands for Busse Industrial Grade finish I believe. It is satin, but not a finely polished satin. It's more of a rough satin. The BIG ASH only comes in .22 and of course only with the rough satin finish.

I had a .32 and sold it. I love thick knives, but that seriously never got carried or used by me. The .22 BIG ASH is quite possibly the perfect ASH. I'll try to get some pictures later, but I'm sure one of the hogs more in the know can tell you all about them. They were a special run, but I bought mine here on the forum just a few weeks ago and it was like brand new.

If you ever saw the d-test on the skinny, you know that there is no easy way to break it so everything thicker is just extra weight. I have two skinnies and none of the others though I have had both other sizes. Weren't the BIG ASH-1's .22 saber?

Tim, you have TWO skinny ASH 1s and didn't tell me! Oh the shame of it all. Just as well, I couldn't afford an ASH now anyway. :(
