I thought you guys might like to see some of my photos from Ashokan. I've gotten a few uploaded, but I filled up a 1gb SD card, so it's going to take me a while to edit them all. Here's what I've got so far.

Mace with his sword.

Kevin, Mace, and Ric Furrer. I don't know the other guy. Sorry

I've got some more photos ready;

And another set;

Dan Maragni MS speaking during his "Grinding 'Longish' Blades" demo.

Oh yeah.... That "young fella" in the background behind Kevin is Mike Spangler. His eyes usually start to glow like that before he turns into a weresheep and starts baaaa-ing at the moon!

Still more;

Kevin Cashen lecturing before his incredible 360 degree flex test.

I examined and photographed the blade after the test. It had sprung back true and had no visible bends or damage.

Yes, it truly was amazing, but don't forget, the blade flexed and returned to true. It did not take a bend.

Too much fun!

Kevin's demos never cease to amaze, and that one was certainly an eye opener... however, I thought we determined that because of the 'standards' commonly being used for flex testing that this knife had flexed 720 degrees? Aren't we supposed to count the return trip as well? Obviously, that man knows how to heat treat!

All of the demos were great this year, and the demonstrators were each fantastic in their own right...
-Dan Maragni's grinding demo pointed out a really simple and totally effective method for grinding in a distal taper that I can't wait to try. His list of 'must-read' books was great, too.
-Ric Furrer's insights on wootz and crucible steels are always intriguing, and so much of the information is NOT what I thought I knew...
-I've seen Burt Foster's integral knife forging demo/clay coat demo twice now, and I caught more on the second time around than I did the first! Burt's a really nice guy, and a born demonstrator!
-Don Fogg's explanation of how to put a final edge bevel on a blade will likely correct a bunch of issues I've been having with that step.
-Howard Schechter's presentation on sharpening was positively fantastic -- I missed the short sword demo AND Jim Siska's grinding demo to stick around and talk with howard (and Mikey Spangler) after his presentation was over. Howard should be on the roster as a fixed item EVERY year, from now on!
-Rick Barrett's just one of the coolest smiths out there, and watching him forge weld a tamahagane billet in my forge was a great treat - I swear, I didn't know it would even get that hot!

It was great to get to see so many forumites (I was actually thinking about trying to list a bunch here, but that's just dumb as hell -- there were so many!), I just want to say thanks to everyone for being as open with their time and experience. Ashokan has been one of the best experiences of my life, and I will likely ALWAYS return.

I forget the gentleman's name who was there filming all of this. He said the DVDs would be available later on Sunday.
I wanted to stay but my ride left shortly after breakfast and it was too far to walk back to Illinois.
Anyone know how to get ahold of the cinematographer?

Karl, that was Chris Meyer (the poster of most of these pics). A great guy, no doubt.

--It was good to meet you this weekend, btw. Your knives are stunning!

How thick was the knife that flexed 360?
And, where can I get the DVD????

Chris, thanks for documenting this years Ashokan so well, the pics are great. :thumbup:

ROFL

Yes and no, it wasn't a joke, but it wasn't what it sounds like either.

OK

Maybe it was a joke. Specifically BECAUSE it wasn't what it sounds like.

Being one of the 'burly' demonstrators, I kinda expected that the knife would actually be mounted on a ball bearing or something and expected that Kevin was going to spin it like wheel of fortune. I was caught flatfooted when he actually asked for someone to come hold the table. At that point, it didn't even begin to occur to me that such a request would be part of the joke, and I was dead sure we were going to have little bits of steel flying at decent velocity in pretty short order... I guess Kevin's sense of humor is faster than my brain. No surprise there!

Man, sounds like you guys had a good time! I've been wanting to get to Ashokan for years, well, there's always next year. So, what did Kevin do, flex the blade one degree 360 times?:D
