Ashokan 2010

Any updates Kevin? I need to know if I'm working on a knife or a sword this weekend in the shop :D

:(

I hope if it comes to pass that it's not due to any hardship or badness for anybody.

I can't go into detail about the circumstances yet, but rest assured it is nothing bad, quite the contrary, it is something so very good for a key person that it had to take priority even over Ashokan! I would probably lean toward making a knife but I have yet to hear it finalized yet.

O.K. I just got the official word. Ashokan 2010 will be on general bladesmithing and all types of blades. Ashokan 2011 will be the official "Sword Ashokan".

OK, since swords are out, lets make this years challenge - ( drum roll please)
Kilt wearing men with sgian dubh knives.:thumbup::thumbup:

You have to have a kilt ( philabeg or philamor - your choice) and hose on to enter the competition.:eek:;)
Ghillie Brogues are optional.

Every entrant places a bottle of single malt in the prize box, and the winner gets the box.

For those too insecure about their masculinity, a bath towel over shorts and crew socks will suffice for entry garb.

The issue might be "too sure about the substantial investment for the kilt". Otherwise I'd be happy to do this.

Aw man...
So much for the sword challenge I was going to post.:(

We will have to come up with something else(that doesnt involve kilts!);)
Could you imagine the horror of seeing Matt Gregory in a kilt!!!
OMG! I would have to cover my eyes with bacon....
Mace

P.S. Kevin...you know we are all wanting to know if this is good news.

challenge accepted Stacy! Lets see the sgian dubhs. I'll even see if i cant get some haggis to cook up at ashokan. <3 haggis (infact i had it the last 2 nights for supper, burns supper on wed with my whisky club, and leftovers thursday http://www.juliosliquors.com/events.htm )

I propose that those who feel left out by it not being sword year instead make a claymore or basket-hilted claymore, and those who like "fighters" or "pigstickers" can make a scottish dirk or ballock dagger instead =D ? (though everyone should make a sgian dubh anyways!)

i'm in on the contest as Stacy suggested it, guess I have to find 10 yards of Murray tartan

Well, ok...since it's GOOD news I guess I'll take the extra year to get ready :)

Now, as to kilts and sgian dubhs....It's been YEARS since I wore a kilt (and it's wasn't a proper one at that). I can't readily trace any Scottish ancestry, so have no proper tartan (and would want to offend by usurping one...). So, Does a Utilikilt and steel toed boots count? :D

Anyone attending a Celtic Festival lately will realize that a utilikilt and boots is the standard uniform for the youth of today.

Many years back I made a blacksmithing kilt that was nothing more than a light weight canvas Utilikilt ( before they came out) with a leather front pannel. The bib of the apron could be attached to the fly with snaps,or removed to wear the kiltalone when not forging.

Seriously, Sgian Duibh knives, and/or Scottish blades in general, would be a good category. Kilts would not be required ( but may well add to the presentation package).

The hell with that noise -- I'm goin' nekkid! I'll show you lame skirtwearin' highlanders what a tattooed barbarian mick in fearsome battle repose does to the locals!

Any more news on this?
September is not too far away!

Gary, I know that the schedule has been settled on, but I don't think it's been released yet. I can say that I've heard some of what's on the schedule and can tell you that it's going to be an awesome Ashokan this year.
