Ashokan 2018 Blade Seminar is now open for registration!

Rob “Deker” Dekelbaum-
Gas Forge Design, Safety, and Efficiency:
In this lecture, Deker will discuss current the current state-of-the-art in gas forge design and operation. He will cover forge insulation and refractory materials, ribbon burners and their requirements, forge chamber size and layout, fuel efficiency, and active forge safety systems that will shut the forge down safely in the event of a power outage, etc. There will also be some discussion of advanced topics including automated temperature control of gas forges and the use of recuperators to further increase forge efficiency. Deker should also hopefully(!) have a newly built forge to demonstrate some of these features.

Hmmmm, might be worth the trip. . .

Got excited when you said New England, but I just checked the map. Yikes, how are you calling that far south of Albany New England :p I’d sure be interested if you guys had any events that wandered a bit further north.

Yeah, that’s the first time I’ve EVER heard any part of NY called New England??

Ok, I guess if you were driving 9-10 hours that does make me a whiner. That area of NY is still a 4.5-5 hour jaunt for us northern VT folk though. Not exactly around the corner, but I might still see if I can make it work.

Heck, when I lived in rural NH as a kid, we considered any drive less than 3 hours a local trip. I can remember loading a wicker basket full of sandwiches, a Coleman gallon thermos of lemonade, and a empty mason jar ( If you don't know why a trip with three young boys needs an empty jar - figure it out) , and taking a "quick run" up to see the Great Stone Face in Maine.

Sorry to hear you're not making it this year Stacy, won't be the same sir!

Yeah, we are all a bit bummed, but Don doesn't have anyone to run the BBQ shop while he is gone, Dave is tied up with students and his aging dog, and I have several conflicts. It just wasn't going to happen easily, and there is no reason to go if you can't enjoy yourself.

Next year, Judy may come up with me (now that she has retired).

That is a bummer Stacey. I will miss you this year. If anyone is looking to catch a ride, I'll be treking up from the land of pleasant living (Maryland).

Less than a month away, and cutoff for before the price of admission increases is Sept 12th, coming up fast!
Always a great weekend to spend deep in the woods with like minded knife guys :)

Here's a Link to one of the Ashokan Seminar weekends

Only 2 more days before the higher rate kicks in folks,

Will there be an opportunity to show some knives I've worked on and get some individual criticism and suggestions?

I would say that is a big yes, the weekend is all about learning and there are many talented makers attending that are more than willing to take a look and offer any suggestions.
