I apologize for using a forum post this way, but there seems to be plenty of folks here who I will be seeing in a week and a half. Is anybody coming to Ashokan that would be willing to bring a gas forge? We have some welding demos, and heat treating demos that could be very informative and the carefree nature of a gas forge would make this much more so, plus with the growing popularity of the "open forge" we are thinking of having more forges to work out of. We do have the indication that one gas forge may be there, but any plan can go awry and I have had to make due without one at the last minute and would not wish it on others.

Will the coal at least be available?

There is a nice big coal forge in the blacksmith's shop, and usually some extra ones pop up too.

OH YEAH I love that forge there! Use it every chance I get when I am there for the NBA meets. I wonder if anyone would be interested in animal head demos, or other non blade forging techniques...........

Del may or may not have one that I am purchasing from him. I'm bringing a tank of propane with me just in case...if the forge makes it, ya'll are welcome to partake!

I need to slap a coat of Satanite in mine in some spots, and it's a pinch big for traveling with --but if I can get it in my car, I will. I won't be able to bring gas, tho... my only tank is a hundred-pounder.

Is there anywhere safe or stable for it to sit? I'll try and remember some big horkin' c-clamps, so a picnic bench with some bricks on it might work.

I got a forge ready to go. Bubble alumina refractory so you can weld in it and not worry about flux damaging the liner.

I planned on bringing it anyway, as last year there seemed to be more people who wanted fire than there was practical space around the two fires available.

I don't have a stand though, so it'll have to sit somewhere, like Mr Purple's.

Min has legs integrated into the forge body, and they stay cool to the touch even after a decent time burning, so it could conceivably sit on a picknic table.

Also... I'll be bringing a full roll of superwool (1" thick, 2' x 25', 6lb density) to see if I can make a sale or trade for it. If need be, we can cut off a length to sit under it for added insurance. The superwool is bio-soluable, so it's not as dangerous as kaowool or inswool. I have found it to be a decent insulator nonetheless.

Hey Kevin!

I just posted in the Ashokan Gladius Challenge thread about this, but figured I ask here, as well...

In addition to my forge, would you like me to bring my big quench tank? Would the Ashokan Powers That Be have any need for such a thing for demonstrations or anything? Please advise, as it's a pinch awkward to bring, but I want to help in any way that I can!

Matt if you want I could bring my quench tank, so you only have to bring your oil, that way we both can cut down on things carried.

Hey that would be handy. I am waiting to hear from Burt F. to see if he will be set for his quenching, otherwise I was prepared to bring some, but now things are getting complicated with the Michigan contingency and our travel arangements, so the forges and other equipment are a nice opition.

No sweat, Kevin... I'm on it!

Sam, I'll find a way to bring all my stuff... I can't foresee needing any more than my big pig, but you never know - might be a good idea to bring it anyway, if you've got the space.

Good idea, may as well bring it anyway, i'll have to stop by Wal mart and grab some Peanut or Vegetable oil on the way. Unless yah got a spare couple gallons of the parks 50.
