Ask Toooj

Hey Toooj, I recently bought a Rat II in D2. My first OKC knife. Very pleased with it so far. There has been some talk on the main forum about the quality of D2 coming out of China. How would you rate the quality of your D2? Thanks

I know Tooj will respond tomorrow, but if you look here on the forum it’s got a reputation as one of the absolute best folders around at any price! I’m also interested to hear if their d2 is sourced from China.

hobnob/Yonose,

Sorry for the late reply. I was out of town on a project. (Visiting Colt)
The D2 in our folders is from two places.
The Plastic handled D2 Folders (Rats) use D2 sourced from Germany.
The Titanium handled D2 Folders (Carter and Cerberus) use D2 sourced from S. Korea
Both steels (and their processing) are excellent and we have had no complaints regarding edge holding, chipping and the normal blade issues.
We, at Ontario, are very satisfied with the steels and we think you will be also.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Toooj. I have no regrets with my purchase of the Rat 2 in D2. What a great knife for the money. Look forward to putting this thing to use.

I have looked several times and can not find an answer, what is the R.C.of the d2 steel in the Rat 2? its a mystery that no one seems able to answer. i have even googled it trying to get a straight answer with no luck. please help.

Can you tell me the correct bolt & threaded sleeve size for the Night Stalker 6 handle? I would like to replace the tarnished/pitted ones with new ones but don't have a way to measure the factory ones and nobody carries these in the hardware/home improvement stores to visually match.

Thanks

Sir, a question I should have placed here for you to read and possibly answer, I made the mistake of placing on the general Ontario section. Anyhow, here it is, and any insight you can offer, will be appreciated...
Looking at the Ontario SP5 blade length, thickness, and blade shape, it would almost seem that the SP5 is a no thrills Marbles Trailmaker.
My understanding is that Ontario made the Marbles Trailmaker versions under contract for James Parker when he was using the Marbles name for a few years. Ontario already having the set up for the blade shape and all, it would make sense for Ontario to offer it under their own name brand via their less costly SP series line. Anyhow, the SP5 sure does look like it's heritage is from the Marbles Trailmaker.
Is this the case with the sp5?

Oh, and if you don't mind my asking a somewhat related question... Is the sp5 being made in 1095 steel (rather than 1075). The vender I ordered it from, had it listed as 1095. The Ontario website also has it as being in 1095. But, I know you had recently stated that 1075 has been the steel used for many of your knives (for most of your non military contract style blades).

PKJ,

Yes. the SP-5 has very similar lines to the Trailmaker. We had experience making that pattern and we felt it was a good enough shape to include in the original Spec Plus line. It has done well over the years.
The steel for the SP-5 is now 1075. There is regrettably, sometimes an information lag on our and our vendor's websites.
Hope this helps.

Thank you :)

*Dangles Cyber Doughnut for Tooj Bait!*

Tooj sir, if I may ask what knives are getting the 1075 redux fer us Civies?

Making your products better and more affordable is always a plus for us.

Roguer,

Any Ontario product using 5160 stays 5160. All military spec'ed product in 1095 stays 1095. All other carbon steel Ontario product that was produced in 1095 is now 1075. Some people may not like it but all of our testing says that 1075 offers solid advantages over 1095. Without getting too technical, the type of martensite formed with 1075 and the free carbon levels makes for less chipping and cracking and improved toughness while still keeping edge holding.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Toooj. I emailed a second time and rececived a reply saying they'd mail me some. Still have not received any though. Guess I'll have to call.

Tooj,
Being that it's fact now that Ontario has switched the majority of their 1095 to 1075 (except for those mil-spec based blades), could you share the time frame in which this happened? I imagine that us knowing that, may help some of us place our past purchases into the likely 1095 or 1075 catagories. Also, when will Ontario likely correct this info on all of their catalogs/marketing, their packaging, and on the Ontario website?
And again, much thanks in advance for sharing your insight with us :)

Dingy,
Yes

RoadDog66,
Patience. We had a major personnel change in the Customer Service Dept. Diane, our longtime, fantastic CS supervisor retired. Our new Supervisor is Lin (She is very capable). I am sure you will be getting it shortly. If not call in and ask for me.

PKJ,
The change over occurred over the last year and a half. The info change is best answered by OKC moderator.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Tooj! I was just wondering which OKC knives were being switched over. And you answered that in later posts.
To others this maybe a Dunder Bolt...er Thunder Bolt! But I think you knife builder types and guys know what your doing for the betterment of the product and your customers!

And thanks for covering that 5160 question I was going to ask next!

Toooj
if i want to buy a sp10 or sp5 made of 1075,how to differentiate from looks?

Dingy,

Sorry; you probably can't differentiate by looks. In the open market there will be a mix. Probably buying directly from the company is your best bet.
Hope this helps.

Toooj,
Am I incorrect to think that maybe my brand new SP5 has a phosphated (aka parkerized) blade finish? If it's not phosphated, then whatever finish it does have, is sure very convincingly similar in appearance to a parkerized type of finish. Either way, it looks good :)
Ontario dating on the box is Feb 2018, which means that it's very likely one of your newer 1075 steel specimens.
In any case, it's very nicely done... two thumbs up! :)

I'm sure you guys at OKC run into tons of videos & pictures of your products being deployed for their main purposes, performing in what these types of tools do best. But, here I share a picture with you of how a tool becomes not only a collectible for me, but also how a tool's simplistic appearance becomes an accessory for my interior decor. Yup, my self titled, and very eclectic, "Man Gadget Collection" :)
Here's a pic of just another way OKC makes it into my decor... an RD Hawk, Spax, and a SP10. OKC is here and there throughout my place. I somehow blend it all in to fit my likes/taste :)
I missed out on buying one of Ontario's Bagwell designed Bowies, and that would have been nice to add to the collection. I mean, they are still out there on the secondary market, but not at the kind of prices I would consider. Oh well, there are still other Ontario knives left to eventually acquire :)

Here are a couple more displays where the Ontario Knife Company has representation. There are more, but I'm sure you get the idea :)
