Asking for Glue/Gluing Suggestions

I've got an ATS-34 blade and a bocote handle I'm almost done shaping. I intend to use 1/4" brass to pin them together. My questions are:
What would you recommend as the best glue? (I have Gorilla and Titebond III on hand)
Is the bocote too oily to effectively glue without leaching some of it out?

Thanks for your thoughts.

John

First I would recommend having what ever would you're using stabilized unless it's very very dense. I'm not familiar with bocote.

As far as glue is concerned I have had no issues using half hour devcon epoxy. I would stay away from the 5 minute and to be safer yet you could go to 24 hour devcon epoxy but like I said I haven't had any problems with the 1/2 hour formula. Just make sure all surfaces are very clean and scored up for a better bond. The longer the set time the stringer it will be.

I believe out of those two glues the Gorilla (polyurethane) is going to work better than the Titebond (Polly vinyl acetate) on the exotic, waxy bocote. Make sure you clean the glue side of the bocote with acetone of lacquer thiner to get rid of some of the wax.

Gorilla should hold the best but be sure to rough the wood and clean both sides with alchol or acetone, you may want to wipe each with a wet cloth. Gorilla needs water to set properly. Use very little it will foam and come out no matter what you do.

The gorilla glue will work fine. It only takes a very small amount of water to set of the gorilla glue, here in the south it will set up in the bottle from just humidity in the air.

Once upon a time, people didn't have stabilized handle materials available to them and their handles turned out just fine. Bocote should stand up well anyhow. Don't bother with the devcon, the glue you have is much better in my opinion.

I use only Brownells AcraGlas gel, the only product I have used for many years. Some folks like the runny thin 'glas, but I find the gel is less messy and easier cleanup.

I haven't found anything that holds as good as the 'glas and the folks at Brownells are the best of the best to deal with.

Devcon 2 ton epoxy is fine. Gorilla glue is a PITA, IMO.

Bocote is dense and oily. Clean it with acetone before glueing. No stabalizing required.

I've used acraglass for the last couple of years. Never had any problems with it. I have heard some guys say it sets up on them in a matter of a few minutes, I have never had that problem. I have a gun dealer here in town that gets it for alot less than I can get it. If I buy enough at a time he cuts me a pretty good deal.

I was under the impression that Gorilla glue wasn't the best choice for oily woods. Am I incorrect on that point?

Since I have the GG on hand I'll give that a shot. I figured it would foam up, I just planned on grinding it off after it dries. I'll definitely acetone the wood beforehand.

I'll plan on getting some Acraglass gel for my future endeavors. Brownells is a good company to deal with.

Thanks for your thoughts, guys. I'll post some pics and let you know how it turns out.

If you scrape it with a razor or sharp piece of brass the majority of the foam will come off easily. I'd use alcohol to clean the wood instead of acetone, it will put some water on it for the glue to react with and leaves less residue.

Re: oily woods - I don't know that many glues are ideal for oily woods, but I've not seen anything that recommends against poly glues in this application.
