Is it OK to establish the value of a knife or type of knife on BFC? I'm specifically talking about knives that aren't intended for sale within the Forum itself. If this is allowable, what is the appropriate place to raise this question?
Thanks:)

I would ask in the Blade Discussion Forum itself. There's nothing wrong with trying to get an idea of what a knife or type is going for even if you are interested in selling it, and don't want to undervalue your offer or ask way too much, either.

As long as you understand that "value" can be a wild variable. Some experts can tell you what a particular model has been going for, but the market can do funny things to prices.

Unlike cars, for example, there is no real book value on knives.

Bernard Levine gives appraisals for a fee -- follow the link in his sig. That would be worthwhile for a valuable knife.

If you post something like "I have a ***** I want to sell and I was wondering what it's worth" I consider that spam and I'll stomp all over you. If we gave people the benefit of the doubt we would get posts like that by the thousand.

The way to find out for most knives is to search the Exchange here and search ebay and see what it's been selling for. If you can't find any info that way then either it's worth nothing or it's valuable enough to be worth paying Bernard Levine for an appraisal. If in doubt ask him -- he won't charge to tell you it's worth nothing.

If you have an old knife in your collection and you'd just like a general idea of what it is and whether it's worth anything or not post on The Bernard Levine Knife Collecting and Identification Forum. They'll tell you what it is and people other than Bernard will often give a free estimate of approximate value.
