I could use some assistance. Over the next month or so I'll be starting a couple of knifemaking projects (my first). Among these pending projects is the desire to make a bali. I'd like to try something about the size of the 42.

While I've got a couple of CCCs and a Jag to model construction after, my problem is that I don't have a 42 to use as a "template," so to speak, and can't make any of the measurements I would like to make (to at least try and ensure a tight, clean fit).

What I would like to know is:
blade:
"depth" from edge to spine (at the deepest point)
tang:
distance between hinge pins, distance between hinge pins & tang pin.
handles:
channel depth, channel width.
outside measurements of both pin & latch ends of handles, both width and depth.

For anyone wondering, I'll be going with sandwich-type handles, and probably a spearpoint/stiletto blade profile. No decisions yet on materials. If I can get this project off the ground, I'll try & post pics.

Please, the more exact the measurements the better job I'll be able to do. Many thanks in advance for all your help.

What I would like to know is:
blade:"depth" from edge to spine (at the deepest point)

0.66" (the blade portion. The kick is 0.70")

tang: distance between hinge pins

0.47"

distance between hinge pins & tang pin.

Approx. 0.3"

handles: channel depth

0.42" at the punyo and 0.30" at the tang

channel width

0.15"

outside measurements of both pin & latch ends of handles, both width and depth.

At the punyo, 0.49" wide and 0.49" deep
At the tang, 0.45" wide and 0.37" deep

I have a small monograph that I've written on balisong construction for would-be makers. If you're interested in receiving it, please e-mail me.

Hey Chuck, thanks. You just saved me a the trip of going into my draw to get my calipers and having to measure the whole thing out!

WillOtheWisp, why not just use your Jag? I know it's not constructed with as tight tolerances, but you should probably be able to look at the jag and see where they went wrong. Then, with that in mind, you can make your own variations. Add a "latch-gate" if you want (that whole word that BM coined just kills me. the name seems so intricate for something that is so simple!). The latch-gate would just mean that you make the handle a little longer, continuing the taper, and come up with your own way of making the "gate".

Update: Materials & blade profile selected.

Handles: SS liners & bolsters, dymondwood (cheap & tough) "inserts," probably SS pins, though I'm open to other sugestions.
Blade: ATS34, & I believe I'll try a single-edged "geometric spearpoint" profile. (I don't think that's been done before...)

Barring any alternate suggestions that tickle my Elmo I'll be ordering the stuff tomorrow. Many thanks CG for your assistance!

Wish me luck!
