Assisted 3-3.5" Plain Edge Folder recommendations

You might want to wait for the rumored automatic version of the Hogue EX01.

Thats a nice knife but almost double the cost of the 585 (Amazon for 82 bucks) and 30+ more than the ZT and the that is based on the Hogue standard folder (non-assist). If it was assisted I could only imagine it being even more. But at any case...it is pretty sweet, love the blade shape and the handle grip...looks to fit the hand extremely well. Just too much for my taste I'm afraid. For just a plain folder the new HEST is on the wish list or at least my watch list.

One of my favorites for EDC is the G10 Needs Work from Kershaw. The looks of this knife bugged me until I actually held it and used it. Very fast AO and a strong liner lock.

Even though this isn't an AO, the flipper on the Kershaw OD-1 fires as fast or faster and its 1/16" under 3" for blade length.

BTW: For the best prices on ZTs you should check with Kershawguy over on the exchange. [shameless plug :D]

Preacher,

I went through the same search/process as you. I was lucky enough to find the 585 in a G-10 handle and non-serrated blade. It is a sweet little knife. THEN I bought the ZT-0350. I have not carried the Benchmade since.

The polymide handle version is cheaper and grippier. G10 is nice and all, but the handles on the polymide version just felt much better to me than the plain G10 slabs.

I order both...I just couldnt make up my mind...where did you find g10 scales for a 585? You gotta post pictures!!!!

I personally think the Blur is one of the best EDC knives ever to hit the market. It's not ultra sexy, but it does everything great. Feels good, plenty tough, tons of steel options. I've given away half a dozen and EVERYONE loves them.

...now only if I could convince Thomas to do a Ti backcut framelock version. Ah geez, dreaming again... :(

Indeed! The only thing that stopped me from getting the Blur about 4 years ago was the lock (not a fan of liners). I'd even be happy if it was just plain steel as Ti could be pricey. STR has had good business turning a lot of them into framelocks for folks.

As for the SOG Aegis, which I've had my eye on recently, it seems to be split down middle for being a great value EDC and issues with blade play and the "plasticky" handles.

I have a Nitrous Stryker that I've had a couple years that had/has significant vertical play from the day I got her new. I just haven't had the motiviation to box her up, fill out the BM return form and prove I was the original owner ( I am with receipt) and return her for replacement or repair, whatever they will do. The issue is that the lockbar was adjusted too short and at a bad angle. Plain and simple. I can grab the blade and with a lot of ease, flex the blade up and down and watch the lockbar wioggle back and forth on this knife. Since day one. Once I do return her and get her repaired or replaced I'm selling it.

I have two preorders for the first HEST run and have an M4 Millie coming and the ZT 550 and 0551 but the Hogues are super sweet knives. I'm still on my honeymoon but I've only carried each of mine since I got them a couple weeks ago.

Nitrous isnt an axis lock which seems strange for BM to go with it. it is cheaper but I have my reservations going away from something that has a great history of working so incredibly well. I considered the nitrous because I like the handle, steel, and the spear point if it came in an axis mech I would look closer. I can see why you want out of it since it has so much play in it.

I also added a BM710 to my order...damn knives like crack! Havent received any of them yet but am waiting patiently..sorta!!!!!!!!!!

Id go with a ZT model or a Blur. ive had great experience with those makers/models !:thumbup:

I am wondering which knife is the toughest. sturdiest, strongest of the bunch:

ZT 0350
Kershaw Blue
BM 585

My guess it the ZT

I agree with things - the Kershaw Boa is simply outstanding and you can still find 'em if you look.
I daily used a single Boa for 4 or 5 years straight. No rotation - no second knife -this one knife did it all for me.It cut very well, sharpened reasonably easily, had a stout enough tip that I never broke it off gouging holes in stuff or prying.Used it as a hammer pretty regularly to pound plastic anchors into cement. The only functional problem i ever encountered was that on a couple of occasions - it failed to lock open -inspection revealed a carpet of pocket lint.in the pivot. I simply made it a habit when sharpening to take my mini-mag and look into the pivot - if it was collecting fur I'd simply lift it out with a small screwdriver.I now apply the same habit to all my daily use knives.
Gotta admit - edge did chip - but frankly the way i cheerfully abuse my knives - this will happen.Still cut well. Finally -after many thousands of open/close cycles -the torsion bar failed. At the time I didn't realize how easy these were to fix -so sent it in to Kershaw. The knife i sent them may not have been dragged behind a truck - but it looked like it -lots of scratches -chipped edge ,etc.. To my amazement they sent me a new Boa !
Great tool -great company.
