(Assisted) Flippers - details inside, I guess I am a little picky ;)

^Good on you.^

Thanks. since I got my first job i run with the principle: If the Book/Movie/Music/Knife/whatever is good enough that I want to own it the people who spent time and money for research/design/production deserve that I pay for it ... so they can keep making more awesome stuff ;D

Sooo, how about the Benchmade 300-1?
Definately considering it, I like the one with the black/blue scales...

Spyderco Southard or Domino?
Spyderco and me will not become friends I fear. I just do not like the look of the Spydie Holes.
As everyone keeps praising the quality etc. of Spydercos I thought I should give them a chance and got myself a used PPT.
Great knife, quality, finish, performance, all great, but I still cannot stand looking at it for any amount of time :(

Also, most of the ZT 3-- and 2-- seriese fit these reqs.

Yeah, the 0200, 0300 and 0770(cf) are interesting!

The 566 seems like the perfect one for you, except for the framelock.

Frame-locks are evil! Too assymmetric and it kinda feels wrong for me with one scale and one metal side.
If there were more "half-covered" frame-locks like the Spyderco PPT's I would consider them though.

Thanks for your suggestions!

And @ gooeytek :
Wow, how could I miss the Leek oO, thanks!

Check out Charles Gedratis Pathfinder Flipper. I think it ticks all your boxes. Except cost, of course. Sometimes that's what it takes to get just what you want.

CuScaDi makes aftermarket scales for a ton of knives, right there in Germany. Might be worth checking in to if you have one that meets all the other requirements.

How about a Kershaw Junk Yard Dog 2.2? Its not assisted but it doesnt need to be as its a smooth flipper. The only down side is the unique pocket clip although a grinder can fix that

Wow ... this is ... wow ... but I'll start with more affordable options and work my way up to customs later i think :)

CuScaDi? German? wtf? guess I need to be more attentive when checking Web Sites, thanks! Gonna mail them now to ask how much some nice new scales for my ZT350SW would cost ;)

Hmmm ... intriguing ... but no assist and no ball bearing ... does it flip REALLY good? Had some bad experiences with purely manual flippers ... on the other hand: I love D2 ... hmm ;)

It flips MUCH better than the Benchmade 300 series, so if you're considering those you should definitely consider the JYD.

There are two versions of the ZT 0770. The current one is 0770 and has nice contoured aluminum (gritty) handles and the next one that's not out yet 0770CF with straight CF handles.

Junkyard Dog comes in a D2 blade with a Sandvik spine. Looks pretty good. Not bearings or assisted, but really fast and smooth opening. G10 both sides. Could probably get one for under a hundred.

The Kershaw RAM is not an assisted opener FYI

I know, the RAM is on the list because of the cool/uncommon RAM lock. I am still pretty new to knives and one thing on my to-do list at the moment is wanting to try out/study all kinds of locks, especially the more rare/innovative ones.

As I am not very fond of metal handles I will wait for the CF version, thanks for the info.

I'll trust you two in that and put it on the list, thanks!

Kershaw Dimension is an assisted button lock flipper.

The ZT0801 is a pretty symmetrical frame lock. One of the best bearing flippers out.

Bwrnd how about sometjing a little more unique in 154cm. Check out the Gavin hawk collab Buck 830 Marksman!

Sooo what exactly am I looking for?
  • Only originals, no unsolicited knock-offs
  • Blade: No holes, no coating if possible, thumb-studs only if they are needed for the operation of the knife (as with the ZT0350 where they replace the stop-pin)
  • Steel: stainless 8Cr13MoV/AUS8A or "better", or D2
  • Opener: Assisted Flipper or Flipper with ball-bearing (assisted preferred)
  • Lock: no frame locks, "unusual" locks (e.g. RAM lock) most welcome
  • Handle: scales on both sides, no holes (except for diff. clip positions and max. one lanyard hole)
  • Scales: (lightning) CF > G10 > Micarta > FRN/Zytel (preferred mixed and/or dark colors, like black, black & blue, etc.). Maybe dark(ish) woods. No horn or bone stuff.
  • pocket clip, ideally tip-up right
  • Price: I would like to start woth the most affordable and then work my way up, so nothing above $150 to $200 for now please,

So is there anything fitting this description or am I too picky? ;)

Best regards and a happy new Year!

Kershaw Rake. Tim Galyean design, assisted opener with flipper, liner lock, black G10 scales, composite blade(D2/14C28N), no coating(stonewash finish), no holes in blade, right or left side tip up/right side tip down carry options, runs around $90

I'll add in on the JYDII - I purchased a limited black coated blade version from Kershawguy a couple of months ago. It's a very nice flipper - extremely smooth, fast, and locks up every time without hesitation - and that's with comparison to some higher end flippers like the 0801, 0560, and Domino. I like it enough that it's currently being customized with a full suit of carbon fiber by Bellablades.

I'd be confident in picking one up to add to your collection, along with that Leek, of course!

Best,
Thomas
