I am interested in buying an assisted opening knife with a strong lock for under $100 if possible. What would you guys reccomend?

Kershaw full sized Cyclone: Liner lock (normally thought of as the weakest type of lock), but made by Kershaw so really shouldn't worry about it. It can take anything you can throw at it so long as you use it in the way it was designed. On eBay for about $48-$50+ shipped.

Kershaw ET: Not the same type of AO that most people think of, but I believe it does fall into that catergory. I think the lock design on this knife is extremely strong and secure.

How about a Kershaw Avalanche, Kershaw Blur, and I will throw in the JYD2 even though it is only a flipper and not speed assisted it still can flip open very fast and has a real strong lock. GOOD LUCK! Kevin:)

Ever think about the Benchmade Apparition? If you look around you can get it for right around $100. I have it in several configurations, but for EDC, I like with the G-10 handle and D2 steel. The assist on it is rock solid and the blade snaps into place with authority. In addition, you can remove the "optimizer" assist and use it as a regular folder as well. If the optimizer ever did fail, it is probably also one of the easiest to repair, at least of any assisted openers I've ever seen, but of course, that's subjective.

Good luck,
Jon

If you want something a little bigger then I would say one of the new BM Strykers. They are right at about $100. But if you want something below $100, or a little smaller then the Kershaw Avalanche.

I agree on the Benchmade 672 Apparition. D2 blade & you can even make it manual opening w/o it suffering too much.

I would have to go with a CRKT M4 in the non AO. I just rec. one and wrote a bit about it in the Rev. section. Without a doubt the finest 50 dollar knife I have ever bought. It is also the smoothest opening due to the bronze bushings they use. The only knife I feel that I haven't had the urge to take apart to put some tetra on it to smooth it out. Well didn't have to do with my 710 either. Trust me on this one you don't need the AO when the knife is this smooth to open. Greased ball bearings I say. keepem sharp

I also strongly reccomend the Kershaw Blur in the wonderfull SG2 bladesteel. Next choice is the Blur in S30V, then the regular blur. The good thing about Kershaw though is they are all nice, and well engineered, and built. The Cyclone would be my next choice. Several others like Avalanch, Leek, and JYD, groove, etc., etc. all can do the job with quality and reliability to spare. Good luck, Joe

...An AO folder for under $100?...You just can't go wrong with a Kershaw Cyclone...

I was about to say, where is Glockman in this?

Ditto on the Mini Cyclone, great for EDC. If you want something bigger then you have a bunch of other models to choose from. Good luck.

Kershaw makes great knives. There is no doubt about it.
However, since they haven't been mentioned, I have to throw SOG out there.
You can get a Flash 2 for about $50 and the lock is strong.
I've had one for about 3 years. It's seen a lot of abuse, and aside from some scratches, is as strong as ever. They don't have the steel options like Kershaw though.
Also, just my opinion, but I have more faith in the strength and reliability of SOG's lock.
I'm not a big fan of the liner lock, although I've never heard of Kershaw's liner lock failing.
