assisted openers on the way out??

I do not see outright bans, but I do see revised interpretation of existing laws, such as the Wisconsin law cited, so that they are included. It will take buyt one court ruling being upheld on appeal to start a snowball rolling down the hill on this one.

No biggie...i can pull a 3" fixed blade out of a tiny belt sheath much faster than I can pull a folder out of my pocket then spring open a switchblade anyways....

It's got nothing to with speed or with convenience. It's a matter of choice. If I want a knife to play with, it's not because I NEED it, it's because I WANT it. What business is it of the government what knife I carry?

As it DOESN'T say in the Constitution, <<governments are instituted among men to pass more laws than anyone can understand>>.

[bleep]

Im not equating the two, but wanting has never had much to do with having in situations like this. I would LOVE to have a minigun to play with at the shooting range...I would love to be able to carry my 15" bowie around at the mall, and would love to be able to set boobytraps in my house in case an intruder came in. Fact of the matter is that I can't. Regardless of how silly I think many of the knife-related laws are, if the gov't determines that AO's were able to slip between the law cracks, and they choose to fill those cracks, what am I going to do? Write my congressman, explaining how important it is that I be able to play with my AO? Whats the reasoning, beyond personal gratification?

I don't think there will be any law changes regarding assisted openers. I think most politicians today realize how stupid the switchblade laws are (if they have given it any thought at all) and none aren't interested in championing additional laws on them. On the flip side, none of them are worried about it enough to try and remove the current laws either.

I think this country is getting to a "don't ask don't tell" mentality regarding switchblades. I have see switchblades for sale in a knife store at the mall in Washington state where they are illegal and at a sporting goods store in Montana (also illegal). You can also buy switchblades on the internet with no questions asked and no one ever seems to care. I just think no is too worried about it anymore and law enforcement has much better things to do with their time.

Whats the reason for the intolerance anyway? You can open almost any knife with a spyderco hole or thumbstud as fast as an auto.

I am wondering two things:
1] If and most likely, when, assited openers are banned, I suppose that it means it does not matter if you own a "pre-ban" a/o knife -- still probably will have to leave it at home.

2] Second question is: Are there are any super easy one handed opening knives in the 3-4 inch blade length out there right now, which employ a thumb stud?

Ayup. "Grandfather" laws affect rights of ownership; carry is another matter altogether. No beat cop wants to worry about when you purchased your knife.

Um... er... yeah, several hundred. :D

Assuming you're limiting the choices to AO, there are about a dozen Kershaw/Onion models, although on some, the thumbstuds are of dubious utility; the SOG Flash I and II; The Camillus/Kabar Dominator, Heat, Blaze and Sizzle; Benchmade 670 Apparition; and those are just the major makers. I'm sure there are a few more.

It's worth remembering that your government is, by and large, not interested expanding your civil rights. While state and federal officials may be persuaded to keep them as is, given a choice, they will usually limit them. Of course, this is and has been done in the interest of 'public safety', so likely as not AOs will eventually be made illegal, so we can all sleep soundly knowing our elected officials are, once again, acting on our behalf by protecting us from baddies. Whether made popular by Hollywood or the media blowing the lid off another hot story, sooner or later these knives will become verboten.

It is all about the image a knife carries that makes it a banned or not. Most people are not knife lovers and wouldn't care less what knives are left on the streets. For all they care about is getting all knives off the streets if that were possible. And it is possible, it is already happening.
Here is a short list of various characteristics from random states and countries that make a knife band:
- switchblades
- balisongs
- gravity knives
- double-edged
- concealed fixed blade
- thumbstud or hole
- locking blades
- more than 4 inches
- more than 3 inches
- more than 2 inches
- its a knife
the list goes on and on.
I don't like the direction of these laws are going. Seem inevitable that AO knives will be illegal. What's next on the list. Waves. I hope the lawmakers and knife haters to catch on to this.
Seem like eventually, all countries will have the same knife laws as those in countries in Europe.

European countries have wide variety of laws reagarding knifes. In Finland the law allows you to own anything. However the law specifies Stilettos as Dangerous weapons, with few other more exotic items. If you use those in fight theres extra problems. The current "cotrol" law what replaced city specific laws makes darts, baseball bats etc. all illegal IF you dont have good reason for them to be with you. I personaly think its fine law. Now it dosn't matter if you walk around with over 4" folder, it matters how you carry it and how do you behave.
If you walk around waving baseball bat and threatening people you will probaly find police next to you fast, but on the other hand you can have 5" folder in your pocket and open package right in front of police, and they do anything.

If you're not talking about AO's, the answer again is yes.

Benchmades with Axis Lock.

SOG Arc Lock - the Vision is a good one. They have some new Arc-Lock models coming out that could be worth taking a look at too.

And of course there are others.

As long as you know how to do it, any folders could be super easy one-hand opener. Nothing to do with lock type. I mean, you're talking about opening the knives, right?
