Assisted Opening - Do we really hate it, or is it a stigma?

Would you buy an assisted opening knife?

  • Never! Those “gas station” knives are for little boys.

  • Only if it were of good quality.

  • Why not? If I like it I’d buy it.

I'm not a great fan of assisted open. But I have a couple of Leeks and a couple of Blurs, and they are on the short list for which knife I choose to carry that day.
It's not that I like them BECAUSE the are assisted open, I like them IN SPITE of being assisted open. They are just great designs.

I tend to veer more towards simplicity done well. For me, that means the less moving parts to maintain and/or replace, the better in a knife. Aside from typical blade maintenance of course. Also, it's just a completely unnecessary feature that does absolutely nothing to impress me, or inspire confidence in a knife. If I want something just as practical, I'd go for a flipper. Otherwise, I don't care if my knives kick like a small pistol.
