At The Crossroads

Gigong is a form of TaiChi, Jeff.... sorry! Though I DO strongly recommend frequent "Kama Sutra-style exercises"! :D Matter of fact, I hope everyone gets to practice the whole danged book weekly! Yeah, right! LOL

I've been trying to do some gigong to reinvigorate myself, just beginning. After yesterday's trying to follow the VHS tape, I popped one of the bad vertebrae and last night and today I can't hardly move! Problem is, I just can't remember if it was the "Sun and Moon Hands", "Repulse the Monkey", or the "Crane Opens His Wing" move that did it. ;) Ahhh, heck, I should'a just Kama'd, eh? :)

Gotta say, though, up until I screwed myself up it felt pretty good! Unfortunately, thus, no gigong or kama today!

It seems like you are holding that guiness stout up without a problem! More lifting may be in order.

Ah, yer right! You shoulda seen the ones me and my son put down last night at the pub! But maybe I should cease the "pint-lifting" exercises and try out that gigong stuff. I always thought that tai chi stuff was for sissies, but heck if Mike Fitzo is into it it can't be all bad. :D

Nah, I don't think it's for sissies necessarily, but that don't mean I'm not one! I don't THINK so, but that's not really a judgment one can make about themselves, eh? You'll have to decide....... LOL

What it does work well for is a broke down old body that can no longer use that exercise bike or the weights or the Soloflex very effectively. For a guy who used to lift weights for recreation, I sure have stumbled. :barf:

Ah, well, I'm also pretty certain that "lifestyle" gave the genetics a real big help.... it might not be fun how I am now, but it sure was fun getting here... :D

I sure would like a good whiskey about the size of that stout you're tipping! Guess I'll just go take my damned morning dose of pills.....

Jeff,

As one who swings a hammer for a living I can understand your tough decision, BUT you do not have to give up forging altogether! Don't sell your forging stuff. You will regret it later. Giving the arm a break and doing something different for a while is a good idea. Variety of work is the key. Proper tecnique is also VERY important.

I have a student who was/is in the same boat as you. He just wented to learn a little blacksmithing but thought he could not because of the arm problems he is having. With the right hammer, anvil hight and proper body mechanics I tought him how he could do basic forging with out having the pain. How to make the hammer and anvil do the vast majority of the work instead of his arm. Granted, he will not be forging up any 2" solid bar into hardie tools, but for forging up pieces of barstock for knives he does VERY well.

Give your self a break for a while, but don't throw in the towel on forging just yet. I can give you all the help I can over the electronic air waves if you want. (Pics of techniques and such) Just let me know.

Many thanks, Scott. I may be asking for your help. For now, I may make plans to buy an airhammer, maybe a blu hammer.
